I wound up bending my chain on my JP double roller when trying to remove it. The cam gear was stuck on and almost didn't come off. So now I need to either get a new chain or buy a whole new setup. I see that zzp sells just a chain under the rollermaster menu but not the JP. Would the rollermaster chain work on the JP? If not which chain would you guys suggest? I removed the chain to have the crank gear machined to fit the crank better.

Most the Rollmasters I have boughten have came with the JP chain.

So, I see what your saying, and I think getting a replacement chain would be ok, and a Rollmaster should fit on a JP if a JP fits on a Rollmaster.

But honestly, if you bent a freaking double roller chain removing it, then what kind of shape do you think your cam gear is in?

I have the same problem when i go to remove them, the cam gear is always stuck on. I don't pry on it, thats a no-no. I get a puller on it, thats one nice thing about these is they give you plenty of holes on the cam gear to grab with a puller.

I would have the cam gear checked for flatness to make sure its not bent or the new chain you put on there will either trash the gear, or itself pretty quick if it is.

    My $0.02 on it anyway.

I am sure I will end up getting a whole new setup gears and all. I didn't bend the chain by prying on the cam gear I bent it prying between the cam gear and crank gear trying to get the cam gear to move. Trust me a puller is one of the next things on my list.

What is your personal preference Farns, which timing chain setup do you like better? The JP or Rollermaster, I know you have install way more of these than I have (mine being my only one).

    Well..ya still pried it. LOL

Honestly, I personally haven't seen the Rollmaster chains ever. Every Rollmaster kit I have ever bought, or installed has always had a different chain on it. Doesn't matter where they came from INTENSE or ZZP, they have always been this way for me so I cant tell you what one is better.

But if you are one to believe everything "they" (no names from me) put out there on a silver platter, they claim that the JW chains are better with all the testing they have done. But I take all this "testing" with a grain of salt anymore.

I know I still pried it hence the reason I am getting a new one .

This is the reason I asked for your opinion, because I sometimes wonder how much testing the vendors do on certain products. This whole issue of double rollers rubbing could have been prevented before the product was ever released. But I think instead it was just "assumed" that it would fit. I remember reading a thread not too long ago (after the problem with the chamfer was found) over on "the other forum", where someone asked a certain vendor if they were planning on looking into machining their double rollers before they sold them to the customers. The vendors response was that their fix for the rubbing was to run double front cover gaskets. You would think that they would at the very least look into this idea not?

It would cost too much for them to actually do R&D some times. Ya sure they fit, "lets order them from a company out of the country and sell them as being a fitting part because we have done testing of our own and they work"

Obviously not, if I yanked mine back of after 2200 miles of use and had rubbing, and their solution to this "new found common problem" is to run two front $6.00 gaskets since it seems only a few people are having these problems, that just shows me that they did no testing other than slapping a set on a motor and said "yup, these fit, lets sell em, cause people will buy them if they know they will work cause they trust us".

Just burns my butt when people we should trust to do the research of the products they sell, fail us like this, and get busted on it, and their solution is a double front gasket. I just have to LOL at these people.

You know who I really feel sorry for...is the poor guy on "the other forum" who had his snag on his oil pump cover and his chain break sending valves into pistons and pretty much trashing his motor. Some said it was an install error...I beg to differ after seeing everyone else's rubbing issues.

I thought machining the oil pump cover down some would be a fix, compared to running two front gaskets and mis aligning things on the front of the motor, but Reptile did both, and still had a failure. Lucky it wasn't an engine failure all together. What the one guy who discovered the "missing chamfer" found, and what Reptile experienced is more than enough proof for me to yank mine and have the inside of the back side of the crank gear machined on a lathe here locally.

It was no time at all to do this work here once we figured out what angle to machine it at. It took him about 5 minutes to load it into the scroll chuck, center it with a dial indicator and set up the rest of the lathe, and then about 5 minutes to machine it. Nothing to it. Ran me $10.00 whoopie doo. Cheaper than costing me a motor thats for damn sure.

Sorry for the vent, just still pissed that company's pull this stuff on their customers. It it were me, and my company...this would of never happened in the first place. But personally if I were them now, I would be buying a whole bunch of crank gears from the company's who make the double rollers they are selling, and have them all machined ahead of time, and send them out to EVERY customer who can verify they purchased a timing set from them, and send them out a FREE machined crank gear, AND a new front timing cover gasket as a way of saying "sorry, we lied about our R&D, and these working just fine." But thats just me...and how I would run my business so I could sleep at night. But I guess everyone has different morals.

It sure would be nice if they sent me a free crank sprocket. Yup, still split like an egg.

Its NOT really "on there" tight, its just not being nice like the crank gear is for being removed easy. After I got my three claw puller on it, there was no effort in it coming off. You just have to pull it straight and it will come right off.

But hey, better tight than loose, thats what I always say.

    ha.

I wish I had little girl fingers and could get them under it to pull it off...

And I think we can all agree tighter is better

Pulled my timing cover off last week. 3 years with the rollmaster, single gasket and no machine work done to the cover. All of these threads had me worried about the timing chain rubbing.

Pulled it apart and absolutely no rubbing, chain was still tight, overall looked really good. The chain and gears looked fine, so I threw it back together with a new cam bolt and installed a SFI overdrive balancer while I was at it.

You have a Fiero, so that doesn't count. j/k

According to the vendors in the USA its an isolated problem with only a select few cars being involved.
