Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
Well, after some digging, I have not found any solid data on this debate. Funny thing, search air intake debate on google and just about every major auto forum has this same topic....
The consensus is more cold air, duh right? I've been checking the Australian forums and as well as the Jbody forums, some of the searches are aggravating.
Kenne Bell strongly disapproves of open cones, simply because of heat. But I know that is more than a warranty issue than anything.
All these new Camaro S/C kits either use the factory airbox or a cone mounted in a box similar to what we have available. I'm just going to say that if they can make 650 hp with a cone in a box I don't see the problem with our setups. I have no data to back this but I'm trying.
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
I have to assume a quality cold air intake should be better in normal use \ cruising as it won't be that restrictive.
I also have to assume even the stock one probably works better cruising and certainly when stuck in traffic with the A/C on on a 90-100F day. Think about it. your car spends MOST of its time either idling or at 1500-2000 rpm. How restrictive do you think the stock cold air intake is at these rpm's with the throttlebody just cracked doing 70-75.
I don't know about other people, but theres more to my life then WOT.
btw, I think people put WAY too much thought into this. I don't think it makes much of a difference either way. If a guy claims a hot air intake damaged his engine, does this mean his car with a CAI is safe to drive on a 70F day but not a 90F day because it will damage it? Thats a result of bad tuning, not an air cleaner.

Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
And 8* of KR and he claims its the airbox that caused that? I blame too small of a pulley or a REALLY ****ty tune.
Those flow readings are useless since he doesnt provide ambient temps.

im going to quote myself:

there is a point where an open cone will trump any other intake. is it when you're lightly modded? no. is it when youre modded moderately? no. it's when you have run out of other areas to expand and the intake is the final choice of making power or not. when the motor demands more air, are you going to give it more air or use an intake and slightly restrict it? see what im getting at here?

Fixed.
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
I agree, but at what point will the engine be consuming that much CFM of air that a intake system will be a restriction?
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
i dont have enough money to do testing like that and the test done by ZZP wasn't done on a car in real world conditions.
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
i picked up power at my level with an open cone over my wizair set up. its not that its a restriction, its that your getting more air allowing you to make more boost also.
what ever makes you sleep better at night, go that route. plus intakes are easy to swap around, try it for yourself, you might get different results from other people.
i like the open cone, its loud, it suits my needs. everybody had different needs out of there car.

I agree, whatever floats your boat right?

as long as you dont claim that its the best solution when its not.:th_thumbsup-wink:

well said. and needs to be integrated into the thread for modding cars.
if im not mistaken its already in there but isn't said properly where a 7 grader can understand lls.

what is the best solution????
thats the thing, its gonna be different for different people.
i could care less about cold air, as long as it flows. some rather have a fwi.
i dont think there is a right or wrong to this question. some people do different things with there cars so they will have different needs.
what might work on one car, might not work on another.
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
Whatever results in the faster car is the winner in the end.
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
Re: Another open cone vs sealed box debate
Why else do you have a "performance" intake on your car? To go faster. So whatever gets you that, must be the better intake. How is this logic flawed in any way?

That's all the matters.
I figure that the air is already heated up a bunch by the blower. The real test should be to measure the air temp after the rotors.

Which would require putting a thermocoupler in there.
Anyone down for this?
