I may be an oddball for thinking like this but I would like to make something different than what the crowd is making. Just to be different. Sounds like turbochargers are all the rave these days. Last time I was on here barely anyone was talking about them. Then something else will come out that will be better than turbocharging. How about a procharger? All the benefits of a turbocharger and a supercharger combined.
I'm not arguing with ya I'm just bustin balls lol
Turbo is different although they are becoming more popular because they require less wrenching lol
Most unique setups are the CSC kits and other then that the whipple kits and mp112 kits.
Procharger = brand of centrifugal supercharger
The benefit of a turbo is that it runs off exhaust. The downfall of the S/C is that it is belt driven.
Here are pics of a novi csc kit (Zuulmusic's kit off of GPN)

Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Ok well just for price comparison what would the bare minimum be that I would need to turbocharge my car and make roughly 400HP (which is about 100HP more than a intercooled setup) with absolutely ZERO knock retard?
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
The standard z3 kit will do that no problems.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
OR if you can weld, like im doing, piece together the kit. Get the plogs, turbo, intercooler, i/c piping, wastegate, bov and the oil lines for the turbo, order the stuff to make the crossover and downpipe. Ive got almost all the stuff except the downpipe and crossover and even then ill only have 1k in my turbo build. You just have to find deals man.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
I guess I just don't understand how a turbocharger can make more horsepower without causing knock retard like a supercharger does. Can a turbohead please explain this?

Dude zero knock is much easier when turbo. You don't have the 250* air going into your engine from an m90. (Might be exaggerated but Ive seen higher numbers than that about the exit temp of an m90 so idk lol)
Bare minimum is relative dude you can't just make a price comparison like that because deals can be had on everything. You can't try to get a specific price on something that is so open to influence.
Cheapest ive seen a complete turbo kit go was 1.8k. Ive seen 2 cheaper but not complete. Other then that it all depends on how you go with your build some people go huge turbo no engine or little engine. Others like me go huge cam and a good size turbo.
Its all relative dude.
Ill tell you what though Ive prob spent a ton less that most people did on their S/C setups making much less power :P
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Well that last statement you made has definetly made me start to think about turbocharging now. Are these turbo kits on ebay complete junk or if I was good could you get them to work? Heres an example of what I'm talking about
T3/T4 TURBO/CHARGER KIT UNIVERSAL HUGE POWER UP 500HP R : eBay Motors (item 250536779266 end time Mar-24-10 16:13:06 PDT)
I actually just found one they claim is for a GTP.

Usually around the fall time is when you see turbo kits all over the place.
Myself and two others that I know of found kits for sub $2k with low miles 2 years ago. 8+ kits went up for sale that year it was nuts!!!
Now you can make 300whp turbo very easily without any engine mods what so ever.
I will say this don't go into a turbo project without a little savings in the bank for backup. Everyone's build is diff and things do break. It's not a kiddy club but if you stay around 10psi on an avg kit you shouldn't run into many issues other then trans. Everyone is going to try to scare people away from turbo setups and its sad really. Granted you should know the risks and such but I mean come on. A few people blow they're trannies within a month of being turbo and everyone goes ****wild against them. My first non HD trans with 92k lasted me 8 months of everyday beating the living **** out of it. Every trans is diff you never know what could happen but guess what **** breaks...
If your goals are sub 300whp don't bother going turbo.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Pretty much. Oh, and for the outlet temps of the m90, try this: ZZP did a study and at 10psi the m90 spits out 270* air temps. Try that one on for size. Turbo doesnt rob crank hp. It has been studied at 10psi the m90 robs 40hp. Turbo does not break transmissions!!! This is a lie, trying to scare people away from turbo. Transmissions break b/c more power is being put to them. You can do the same thing with a supercharged setup, its just easier to turn up the boost on a turbo setup, hence why people blame the turbo. Its downright ridiculous.

I knew it was something in the 2's but I didn't wanna post anything that high without being sure. lol
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Well I'm definetly interested in the idea. Do you know any websites or threads about the basic layout of a turbo setup How about one where a guy puts a turbo into a car step by step. I honestly can say the only thing I know about a turbocharger is that it is driven off of the exhaust. Is there a thread that will answer my questions like What is a wastegate? Where do the oil lines hook up? How do u adjust the boost? Whats a blow off valve? bypass valve?
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
TurboByGarrett.com - Turbo Tech101
The z3 kit is very easy to install, you just remove the crossover and install the new one, turbo, downpipe, and intercooler and plumbing.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
x2 on the garret pg!
Ok on our cars:
Oil sending line T's in the stock sending unit.
Return line replaces the low oil sensor on the oil pan.
Cartuning's install instructions page for their kit. Pretty much how you install the zzp kit other then the wastegate location and such. Although it is almost identical to how you install the z3 kit.
Cartuning Performance
It's really straightforward dude.

Intercooler/Tiny Pulley/42.5 injectors/Headers/Ported Blower&LIM/Cam or Rockers...then save for a transmission...[/QUOTE]
+1 on the Headers....
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
I don't know how everyone can just skip over the transmission. I hope you don't come back on here asking what happened to your trans when you destroy it because your putting more power through it. I have 90,000 on a stock on with a dp and intake and mine is already destroyed. The torque converter, valve body. I'm trying to save you but if you get those performance parts without beefing the trans your going to SOL.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Im a tech. and im fully prepared to throw a getrag in there when it grenades.

i got 135k miles out of my non-hd trans and i beat my car like a redheaded stepchild. if yours is busted at 90k with minimal mods i dont know what to tell you about your driving style.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Tells me it is worse than yours thats for sure.
Re: Best gains for dropping $2000 into a GTP
Guy I was putting mid 300whp down every damn day WOT on a non HD trans with 92k on it. I'd boost more when racing legitimate cars. I beat the ever living **** out if. Burners, launches, rolls over 120 and the damn thing lasted 8 months. Would of lasted longer if I had given it a break that night when she started whining.
