First, my great thanks to those who have posted the suggestion of testing the fuel pump resistor by bending the terminal on relay 15. The test worked, the resistor (cracked and one wire fell off before I got it out) replaced and I'm back up an running. However, while troubleshooting before getting home to read the forum some strange happenings went on.
It was a cold dark night in Kansas. I was just leaving one of the fine local fast food joints in my 98 GTP when I saw an opportunity to squeeze into an opening by liberally applying my foot to the accelerator. After merging into traffic I left off the gas and approached an intersection and what was this? No power steering? Ah, the Prix wasn't running. Thus the thanks for the help above.
But, one of the things I did under the parking lot lights to try to get going was to replace the throttle position sensor. When I did, bingo. Fired right up and off I went. Only I was limited to first gear. I didn't bother taking it past 3500 rpm since I should be doing 90 mph by that point but was only going 30. The check engine light did come on but I haven't had a chance to go find out what code was generated.
Is there some sort of logic in the PCM that limits you to first gear when the fuel pump resistor is busted so you keep your rpm's up?
Doesn't make any sense to me because it would idle just fine at stoplights along the way. I made it over 5 miles that way before it died again just as I entered my neighborhood. Might have had something to do with me not being able to resist rompin on it a little while the revs were up (stupid thing to do when it already has some undiscovered problem). Had to push it home from there, gasp and wheeze.
