ok, i tried searching this forum but the search tool sucks here. i was going to install some 1.9's but that kinda fell thru for the moment.

question is when you torque down your new rockers doesn't the cylinder your working on have to be at TDC? me and a buddy were goin back and forth on this cuz i'm almost 100 percent you can't be in the middle of a stroke when tightening them down.

    all who know please enlighten

If you’re also replacing the springs, with 1.9s you better, placing the cylinder at/near TDC will keep the valve from falling into the engine. I believe that is the only reason people move the crank around, but I’m not sure if this is even relevant to 3800s. I know someone will add to this, good luck man.

Ten years of continuous driving excitement and counting!

Nope...done rockers on a couple cars...just unbolt the stockers and throw the new ones on. Can you do it? Sure...is it worth it...prolly not. I would just prime it and then crank it over for a minute or so with the VC's off and the ICM unplugged to see if everything moves correctly...then re-torque everything to make sure they are all snugged down to what they are supposed to be...and IIRC that is like 25 ft.lbs or something close to that. While your there...I'd put in reusable bolts from Comp.

Then take it out and be easy on it to see if everything sounds good and if it does...give it hell That way you'll know for sure if something is bad or not LOL

When i was tightening the new ones, i would crank the motor by hand, then check torque readings, repeat, repeat, repeat, until all them are torqued in any motion.

i just torqued my down how it was. no issuies.

how i see it, you are torqueing a bolt into the head, not the actual rocker down. i had to short of pushrods at first for my slp 1.8 rockers and when torqued down the dident even hit the pushrods. just kinda goes to show your not torqueing the rocker down to the push rods and valve springs. only the bolt into the head.

priming them up tho is not a bad idea.

To do it properly and right, you have to take it to tdc (valves closed) to alleviate the pressure from the lifters pushing against the rockers via the pushrod. You have to do this to get an accurate torque and yes it is 11 ft/lbs plus 90 Degrees.
