Took me about 35 minutes to troubleshoot to that point but I'll skip that part. Replaced fuse with a 15amp spare, car ran again and I went on my way making mental note to check this forum later. Next morning forgot about it and went on a long trip. Several starts/shut-offs later the same thing happened - blew the fuse on startup when car had been running for a long time. Swapped with a 20amp fuse (no more 15's left) and got to where I could research/repair things. Read several threads including this one and decided to try easier/cheaper repairs first and then replace pump only as a last resort. Went to store and bought fresh fuses, new fuel filter and new fuel pump relay. Replaced filter, put 15 amp fuse back in and then took my OLD relay and tried the pin 85 bypass thing. (I wanted to see what would happen.) Well then the pump wouldn't run. So in other words, with a good fuse but pin 85 bent out - I had the same symptoms as a blown fuse. So in my mind that points to the relay being bad. So I put the new relay in (with functional pin 85) and the car seems to run fine (knock on wood).
If my repair sticks, then this is what I think my issue was:
1) either the fuel pump relay failed and that was what was blowing the fuse, or
2) clogged* fuel filter causing pump to pull more amps, took out the fuse and the relay during the first or second failure.
* (really doubt this was it because car ran fine at high rpms and for long periods of time).
