I would have preferred that they used a shorter filter and turned the alignment more verticle, but Im sure that would have presented issues with suspension travel.

I personally like the filter hanging straight down. It allows me to fill the oil filter with oil before I put it on. And allows me to drain the oil easier and cleaner. I am glad the oil filter sits as it does. And while I too would like it further away. I have not heard of even on instance where the pulley caused any rubbing, let alone a hole in the oil filter. It just doesn't happen.
