its when you dont have any form of intake, but just a cone filter on the closest part to the throttle body.

I've got an Amsoil filter. My supercharger was a little louder using the Amsoil filter compated to the Spectre Oiled filter (which is comparable to the KN, probably). Anyway check out this website, it explains amsoils nano fiber technology that they use in their filters.
