Done tons of research and from what I can tell you are ok on the 3800 heads as long as you don't surpass .550" lift. With the GT1 cam and 1.7 rockers I works be at .5389" lift. Is there any reason why I can't get away with this without modifying the valve guides? Furthermore, if I run 105# or 125# springs with modified retainers this would buy me more clearance wouldn't it? Tell me what I'm missing!

Yes I think you can get up to around .600 lift (after head work or you will have interference issues). I'm running stage one intense cam (.525 lift) with 1.8 rollers. Which puts it around .600 lift. You will want heavier springs than that I believe 150 (it's been a while).

installing different springs and modified retainers wont give you more clearance, but if you install them at a different height, thus increasing the lb of the spring, you could get more clearance. I dont know a whole lot about cams and rocker combinations, but from what I've read, doing higher ratio rockers with a cam doesn't help very much. for instance, overkill has a custom grind cam that he designed for use with higher ratio rockers and he advertises an additional 10 horsepower. not much more horsepower for the 400 dollars or so for a new set of higher ratio rockers.

as far as I know, milling the valve guides is all that needs to be done for valvetrain clearance issues.

I know I can mill the heads, but from my understanding with this combination I would still be safe and wouldn't have to.
