Hi, just looking for some advice on my 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8 n/a. About a month ago, was driving around for a few hours here and there and engine light came on for the first time in over a year, when I had replaced the hose from throttle body to purge valve to pass emissions. All was well, just figured I'd check the code at work(at a GM dealership in parts) when I came back after the weekend. Well I was almost home and taking my second to last turn to my complex and my car just shut off out of no where in the turn without any notice. So i just coasted to the side of the road and put it back in park and started it back up and went home. Let it cool down for an hour and so and figured I'd better find out what the code was right away incase something serious like fuel pump or something, so I drove to an Autozone a couple miles away and got a p0102 and a p0171 and also a p1811 for a long shift from this crappy used trans I have, pretty sure that's not the problem. I know the p0102 and p0171 are probably both MAF related since they set together, so I made it through the weekend with no more stall outs and the SES light eventually went off after 3 ignition cycles. So when I came back to work on Monday I got some MAF cleaner from NAPA and cleaned it out and all. Didn't have any stall outs after that, but the SES light would seem to come on once a week or so and then it would go off after the 3 ignition cycles, but it would only seem to come on if I had been driving for a fairly long time, maybe about a half hour or more straight. Well this past week I had another issue of my car cutting out just going about 25-30 down a straight road, and I had only drove home from work(about 15 minutes) and then went inside for about 15 minutes more and then I left again and thats when it cut out that time. Today has been the worst so far though, I went to my parents about 30 minutes away and my engine light had been on but when I left their house which was my third cycle the light was off. Well I was there for several hours so my car was cold when I left their house and I was pretty low on gas, was trying to get there and back to Martins so I could get the most of my gas points and halfway back to town the SES light came back on the interstate and I got into town and near Martins my car cut off again, so I coasted into the parking lot and sat a minute and started right back up and was gonna go ahead and get gas but their pumps were crazy busy so I headed to the other Martins a little ways past my house and my car cut out again about halfway there and then was having problems starting up. So I sat and let it cool off for about 5 minutes and then eventually made it to Martins and got the full tank of gas. Almost home and on my last turn into my house my car cut out yet again. I got it home and now here I am. I'm pretty sure I need to just replace the MAF but wanted to see if anyone else had any second opinions. My cars got 220k on it and last year I did a full upper and lower intake reseal and also replaced both O2 sensors with factory parts. Car always seems to run good in the first 15-20 minutes of driving but once hot will run a little worse, I think partly due to the trans, probably one of the shift solenoids. I don't really care about that hard shifts, just can't afford to have my car cutting out like it is. I don't have any problem buying the MAF, I get the parts at cost. I was probably gonna get the AC Delco All Makes MAF for about 85 bucks, compared to the factory GM Delco MAF which is about 200 cost. Think that will cause any problems? Just looking for any second opinions. Sorry this so long. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Did your vehicle experience the same symptons, with the cutting out and restarting right away? I wouldn't think the ICM would be so intermittent like the problem I'm having. I'd think an ICM would also possibly cause ignition misfire codes and would also probably not restart right away or possible not restart at all or even run at all for that matter. Even if the engine would start with a faulty ICM, I'd think it'd run severely rough and erratic. I seem to be running okay its just the stalling and cutting out very randomly, always when I'm off the throttle. I don't know, just what I think, probably not ICM?

Sounds like a bad MAF to me. Don't have any experience with AC Delco MAFs. But I do hear that Grand Prixs can be real "picky" about the kind of MAF installed. Have you recently performed a tune up? Would also be a good idea to pull the Throttle Body and give it a good cleaning. Keep us posted

Throttle body was cleaned when I did the intake reseal. I probably do need some new plugs, but doubt that would cause the shutting off. Pretty sure its the MAF but really just wanting to confirm that the MAF could cause this random cutting out of the car.
