Thread: Odd Noise. (not sure if proper section)

Yesterday I noticed my car making a weird noise. It sounds like a hum and it comes in at around 25 MPH. It gets pretty noticeable at like 35-40 MPH and then by around 50+ MPH the road noise over powers it. It sounds like my rear leveling suspension air pump is kicking on. I checked all tires for misc implanted objects but no dice. Noise persists regardless of engine RPM, what gear I'm in, etc etc. Any ideas?

best to jack up the car, one wheel at a time, leave the wheel tight, then grab the top of the tire push and pull at the top, firmly, but slowly, watch the rotor where it meets the caliper, if its moving a lot, the hub is bad.

abs light on yet? or acting up?

Driver's front has the slightest bit of movement. No ABS lights or anything as of yet.

if you hear it from the driver side front area, then thats more then likely the sound.

then theres always have a friend hang out the window while you drive. to listen for it.

I'm pretty certain that it is the driver's front. The passenger front is solid as a rock while the driver's side exhibits a little play. So I have to replace the whole hub correct? Is this a bad job? I know they're not too expensive.

i got a timkin from auto zone, (about 130.00) that way the new part is local should it fail in the next 3 years.

took maybe a hr to change.

you will need a 34 or 36 mm socket to get the axle nut off. if you dont have sockets that big you may want to find one that fits first. they cost about 10 bucks at the parts store.


theres a how to here too. look that baby up. it will be the same as GP or regal or bonnie.

Go buy a timkin or moog from your parts store.
Jack car up and put on jack stands.
Remove tire.
Remove caliper and bracket/brakepads.
Remove rotor.
Losen axle nut so its flush at the end of threads and wack it with a hammer to break the axle from hub.
Remove 3 bolts on back of spindle that holds the hub to it.
Hit the side of hub with a hammer cus its probly gonna be stuck.
d/c wire from hub
Remove hub
Install new hub
Torque axle nut.
install rotor/caliper ect
put on wheel and torque lugs.
lower to ground and done

fyi pb blaster is your best friend

ill add a few tips, if your spare tire lets you see the axle nut, put the pare tire on, then lower the car and then break the nut free. if the spare wont work for you, then take the tire off, drop a 6 inch 3/8 socket extension in the fins of the rotor near the top of the caliper, then break it free, this is of course if you dont have air tools.

i also like to pop the tie rod off the steering knuckle, take the nut off it, then hit the flat part of the knuckle with a hammer, it will pop with a few good hard hits. this way you can turn the steering knuckle to get to the 3 bolts that hold the hub on.

Just finished putting a Moog hub on. Job was easy enough even without air tools. Thanks for the tips everyone.
