Thread: spun a bearing??!

Well, let me show you this. This is a spun bearing and I'm pretty sure you'd know whether or not this is your problem. And I believe we've already ruled it out, but if you're curious here's mine. IMG_0325.mp4 video by BrandonL2000 - Photobucket

And yes I mean like springs rockers lifters that kinda thing. But if the sound has went away it's possible with the stuck lifter idea... possible.

Regardless, I think first step for you is to do an oil change, you don't want to keep seafoam in the crankcase long. So do a good oil change, check for any bad signs in the oil, and let us know. If the noise comes back, use a stethascope and listen to your valve covers and you might be able to pinpoint an area of noise.

Lastly, given none of us but you and a friend have heard the noise, hell it coulda just been belt/pulley noises that were ticking. Just a thought

if you leave the drain plug out and dump a quart into the oil fill cap there, it will flush the pan out some more if you want to. use cheap oil for that.

that could have been a lifter that was not pumping up, its kinda normal for some 3800 engines, mine did it i few times, read up on it, and i learned if the ticking goes away in less than 2 minutes of running its the lifter.

ever since mine did it (over a year ago) i have been running 3 quarts of 10w 30, and 2 of 10w 40 weight oil.

funny as it sounds i got 3 good ticks when i started my car at my brothers house yesterday too. hasn't done it since, and i just changed my oil a few weeks ago. hasn't done it before yesterday in a real long time.

so good chance your oil just got thinned out. and you caught it.

oh and i see no need to let it drain over night, thats just silly.....

Sounds to me like you may have had a hydraulic lifter that collapsed or got plugged up by a piece of debris in the oil. Lifter problems can come and go like that. Seafoam would have helped you in your situation. A quart of ATF mixed in with your oil would have done the same job as seafoam.

If you added anything to the oil, Seafoam or ATF or anything like that, make sure you do ANOTHER oil change within the next couple days to make sure you get all the stuff out. The only thing suppose to be in the crankcase for an extended period of time is OIL. Just don't want you to have problems 2-3000 miles down the road.

They actually overlapped each other so smoothly I have them put in my "Man Cave" on a shelf and they are fit together making a circle and have been holding since that day. Sux but it happens.

And incase you don't see a problem... the edges, look at the edges... this is how a normal should look

That's good and all but draining the oil doesn't get it all out the first time, that's why I said in a couple days (this weekend if you don't drive much) if you put any into the crankcase with the oil, you will want to do another oil change. 1 change is just never enough, especially if coolant or a cleaner product gets in the oil. It will ruin bearings and you will end up like I did, and that's not a pretty situation.

Just sayin. Not gonna twist your arm, if another $30ish for an oil change isn't worth $1000+ for a new motor, your money.
