Hey guys I'm going to buy a pair of port and polish heads off a guy, was wondering if you guys would look at some of the pictures and give me some insight on them. Also which casting number should I ask for pictures of, just to be sure of fitment?

As long as your doing n/a to n/a or supercharged to supercharged there should be no fitment problems. And you best be port matching your lim too or else your kinda limiting your potential with those heads.

Does it look like a good port and polish job was done?

Appears the heads have been re-surfaced. Combustion chambers are "as cast" from the factory, and so are the intake and exhaust ports.

So you saying they don't look ported and polished?

Looks like very little if anything was done to the heads. I can still see the casting flash inside the ports and in the chambers. Do they come with valves and springs? Ported heads should at least be "gasket matched" on the intakes, combustion chambers polished and have some bowl work done. These appear to have none of the above .

The guy says that's the texture the carbide left. And that the heads were coated in a sealer so they wouldn't rust. Says that's why the ports look dark. He's going to polish them up before he ships them.

If someone told you those heads you are showing in the pictures where ported/polished, they are are not telling you the truth.

He said he did a valve job on them to and he's including the valves. Says the valves are 1.89 and 1.58. Does it look like he did the valves? He wants 200 dollars is that a good price even if I still need to do a little bit more work?

These are stage 3 Intense heads for reference on porting/polishing.

We can see in the chamber that they are fairly smooth.

Exhaust port, material has been removed to the point that you can see the brass valve guide and inside the area, it is clearly clean and smoothed.

Intake side. Notice how the ports have been enlarged, smoothed etc.

Intake opened up to gasket match just like the head
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Personally, I would walk away from someone that gives inaccurate information.

Is this the same person that said the heads were p&p?

Actually, you want the intake side to not be as smooth as the exhaust...

Proper air molecule atomization is key.

I thought we were all about MOAR AIR = MOAR POWA

...I would probably still walk away, unless you want to buy them and try to improve on where this guy obviously left off.

you want the intake side to have texture. it is not just air going thru here, it is air and fuel. if the walls are too smooth then the fuel will come out of its vapor form and collect on the walls of the port. this will cause unbalanced fueling. the ruff walls cause turbulence that creates a better boundary layer and keeps the fuel in suspension.

as for the level of porting on them... my first impression is that the only thing done was a valve job. but bill is right you can see in the ports that the valve guides were cut down some. the porting isnt major. but then for an NA engine you don't want to go over board unless you plan to go turbo. $200 sounds good to me if it includes valves and like you asked are good cast #'s and are not cracked. also make sure they weren't milled down too far either.

Still debating weather a set of project heads are worth the hassle :-\ I'm leaning towards no. Money to do it right for 15-20hp doesn't seem worth it.
