Hey there everyone, new to the forum, popping my post cherry right now. My 98 gt spun a rod bearig, is knocking clanging and basically destroyed. So im looking to do a full swap. Ive lined up a used 3800 s2 with trans, only 74k miles for $365 (inorite steal:-) ). My concern is its out of a 95 bonny, but wouldnt drop in his 98 bonny. Any insight here would be useful gentlemen, since im new to the gp's. I'd hate to drive 200 miles, pick it up and have my mech say its a no go. Thank you

grab the PCM. The transmissions are different. You have the 4t65e and the other is 4t60e. Or you could just use your transmission I beleive. Where at in Michingan are you?

This is what the guy told me.
" The problem I had was the position of the spark plug. I guess the 96 motor were evenly spaced apart along with the exhaust and this one has two of them closer together changing the exhaust manifold.

If it is a series 2 3.8 why wouldn't it fit. Same motor different car. Only thing different is the transmission which will also fit. May need a different trans mount but not sure.

Edit: If your using your trans, then it will be a direct swap. The vac line routing is different for sure but it should be easy to switch. I wish one of the other members would chime in.

Just make sure it's a series 2 3800 and not a series 1. I'm not sure what year they made the switch.

Thats the only reason I can think of as to why It won't fit into his 98 Bonnie. Double check to make sure its a series 2 and not 1....Like ^^^said.

^^X2 I think some of the 95 WB platforms were built with the series II but if the exhaust manifolds are different then yea, it's a series I. I'm pretty sure all series II motors had the same bolt pattern for the exhaust manifolds and crossover. Only difference was the DP and the rest of the exhaust.

    Bonneville guru here.

    95 NA was S2
    95 SC was S1

If this is an NA, then take the motor, it should be almost identical to yours with a couple big dumb brackets etc hanging off it. I'd keep your transmission, wiring and pcm. Just use the motor and it'll work just like your old one did.

It looks like different manifolds than whats on the series II and the LIM/injector bungs look to be of a series I.

That's a 92-94 Series I NA motor. L27 is the motor designation. That motor came with either the black plastic upper that you see on that one or a metal upper (silver in color).

That's not a motor you want.
