my 98 pontiac grand prix GT is overheating . when i sit still with the car running the temperature goes up...the other day while siting still it started smoking and leaking coolant.what should i do ad what could it be.

Look for the leaks.

First, ensure you keep the radiator up to it's top with fluid. And ensure you don't open it hot.
Look for the leak and identify the parts that are leaking if you want/are capable of basic repairs. If not, I'd schedule an appointment with the mechanic. You don't want to hurt the motor by overheating.
There are a number of things that can be the issue. however since you mention seeing coolant outside the motor, that leads us the possibilities of water pump, radiator, coolant elbow and hoses.
