A few days ago I had a new MAF sensor installed in my 2000 Grand Prix GT. It fixed my initial problem, but now when I start my car it idles at about 2000 rpm, and then goes down slowly. I put it into drive and it acts fine, no problems as I'm driving. If I stop it and start it again when it's warm it doesn't do it. I'm wondering if this is a precursor to another problem....

thats normal, it does that to warm up..
mainly cause theres ppl that put in drive as the starter is still in gauged and beat on it before the oil has reached the valve train,,
so it tries to warm up as quick as possible

no no, 2000 rpms is way too high at first start up.

normal start up should be at 1200, then slowly down to 900 and finally rest around 680-700 when warm.

    any codes present??

maybe clean the TPS sensor and IAC sensor on the TB

wrong, its set by the computer. cold will just change how long it will stay at said rpms.

it will never be 2000 rpm ever at start up, if it is, there is somthing wrong,

Mine does what ffdp says, but it jumps up pretty high initially when cold (fuel must flood the engine or something)

So you are saying when its like 40 degrees and your engine has been sitting over night, and you crank (takes about 1.2 seconds for me at that temp i believe) the engine, it starts right up and goes STRAIGHT to 1200? I will get a video of mine in the morn. Cuz mine jumps to 2000 plus

yeah when its real cold my car will idle at 1200, now with it being in the 50's its idling at 800 in the morning. .....2000 sounds high.

maybe try cleaning the throttle body and all the sensors.

that is working fine, straight to 1100-1200 then down. Its adjusting to air temp and coolant temp and other stuff once the info got to the pcm.

It was pretty chilly this morning when I started it, about 50 degrees. It was at about 1200, then went up to 2000, then dropped, and when I drove it to work I had no problems. I started it at work, it did the same thing, put it in drive and no problems. I stopped for gas, and when I started it then it didn't go higher than 1200 and settled in around 800-900. I just don't want it to randomly die on me or something, or maybe I'm overreacting?

id try cleaning the throttle body up real good, like take it off and remove all the sensors, and clean it. good chance its just sticking a bit and needs to be cleaned.

for the price of some cleaner and a gasket, you cant go wrong starting there.
