Alright I'm Extremely pi$$ed right now I've had my grand prix for little over a month and the AC hasn't worked but that hasn't been much of a problem since i usually drive with the windows down, but just today after not driving it for 4-5 days the AC compressor is making a screeching sound much like when brakes are going bad but this is constant and gets worse the more it's driven. When I got home I popped the hood and found that it was the compressor making the noise but I also found tons of metal shavings sticking to the end of the outside of the compressor??? Has anyone had this problem? Will it go away? Any quick fixs? Because as it stands right now the only solution that comes to my mind is a whole new compressor which will end up costing me more than what a paid for the car..... what should i do?
Thanks for any help in advance!!

Sounds like the clutch and/or pulley is getting eaten up. Bad bearings or something.

    New compressor time.

The metal is probably from the front bearing. The squeeling is the clutch trying to engage a locked up compressor. Time to replace it.

Agree that the entire compressor needs replaced. I had good luck with a used unit from Ed Morad. About a quarter of the price of a rebuilt one and has lasted me almost 2 years.

If the noise is coming from the clutch along with the metal shavings, once the clutch wears out the noise should stop and everything should be fine except for a dead compressor... right or wrong?
I also checked to see if the compressor was loose, a sign of a bad bearing, and it is pretty tight little to no movement...
my dads buick had the same noise awhile back and i looked at it and there are metal shavings on that compressor too and the compressor still works...

Eventually it could lock up. If it does that it will burn through your drive belt in a few seconds.

I had that happen on my previous GP. Compressor locked up and then that snapped the belt, then it overheated and I guess because of where the coil packs were located on that motor, the heat from that took out a coil pack.

I dont know how prudent it would be to do so, I was always taught it should be done anytime the compressor is replaced, but you may want to go ahead and get a new dryer and the orifice tube. Though that orifice tube may be a small challenge to replace.
