its very, very hard to break the oil pump since it's driven off the crank.

Yeah, probably not an issue with the oil pump. Very unlikely.
I would hook up an oil pressure gauge to make sure. But probably more of an issue with coolant getting into the engine and spinning a bearing.
So it turned out it wasn't that at all, a lifter collapsed and caused a racket. There's no damage done. I'm not sure if you can buy these individually , and I know 3400 uses the roller litters. Will one from a 3.4 work?
