Hey guys so about a year ago my 97 gp engine had a small fire which caused the engine to blow. It had over 150k miles. Anyways I wound up replacing it with a year 2000 engine and its been running great since. Well interestingly enough, YESTERDAY i received a letter from GM stating that my vehicle has not been brought in for safety recall 09047 which is specific for 97 engines. Mind you I have owned the car for about 2 years until I just received this.

The letter states the vehicle is being recalled because"An underhood fire may be caused by drops of engine oil, from seepage or spillage, being deposited on the exhaust manifol through hard braking. If the manifold is hot enough, the oil may ignite into a small flame and, in some instances, the fire may spread to the plastic spark plug wire channel and beyond..."

So my question is, do you guys believe there is any possible way to get compensated after all this time? I am continuing research on this recall but even if it was caused by this manufactured problem, is there anything I could do? Show proof of engine swap and manifold replacements..etc? Thanks guys.

I dont know man...May have an issue with statute of limitations by now...You should have gotten that notice years ago. This was an issue all the way up through the 03's so you may want to find out if your new engine had the valve cover gaskets changed or you may end up with the same result. You definitely want to check into it since they have on record that your last motor didnt get the recall work. But keep in mind, they may want you to prove that this was the reason the other motor burnt up.

was there a police report , fire report? receipts for the used engine a receipt from a mechanic? from the install.

a lawyers letter head may help but not to sure if it would pay off in the long run, maybe you can find a lawyer to tell you what your options are and you can do all the legal foot work, letters go a long way if worded correctly.

you'd have to prove it was the valve covers leaking oil that caused the fire.

I realize I'm bumpin an old thread, but received my umpteen notice again in the mail today and see the core of the recall was never addressed in this thread... maybe in some other thread, duno nor going to look.

I keep throwing the notices away because I see it as a waste of my time going to a stealership for this halfassed repair.

So, here's what recall 09047 is all about... models covered and visual of the repair itself.
