i purchase 2 cans of Brite kleen engine cleaner.
    Drive to car wash.
Sit there for a little to let the engine cool down.
Spray everything with the engine cleaner
Wait 10 minutes for cleaner to work
Pull into car wash and spray the crap out of everything. (i do not hold back for anything)
After driving a little and engine is dry a spray tore foam shine all over(try to miss belt otherwise may slip or squeel) and wipe off excess
I do this every spring to every car i have owned for the past 10 years.

No problems ever and engine looks sweet

If you haven't done some maintenance, do it. Plug wires are probably the biggest issue when washing a motor.

I bougth my car at 161K, and powerwashed it 3 times. Don't pummel gasket areas and you are fine. Don't spray electrical stuff directly and when you wet the belt..expect it to make some noise.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
