have a 2000 GP GT(3.8). this summer got my ac back working as i hit a deer back in 07. car sat for awhile(2yrs..LOL) pieced it back together for a 2nd car. the ac didnt work. condenser was bad, replaced it ac worked great this summer. also changed a blend door motor and added more freon
noticed the air wasnt getn cold as it should...my compressor makes a metal jingle/grinding sound..?? thinkn the clutch is bad, but still works... also may have a small leak in it cause i had to add freon with in a month..it was a HOT month.. LOL

my question is, will is be worth having it rebuilt or buying a used one from morad..????

    THANKX

That sounds like the clutch bearing is going out. Recently replaced the A/C comp. on a Bonneville due to this. The clutch assembly was half the cost of a NEW (not reman.) compressor, so we just decided to replace the whole thing.

Either way, don't forget to replace any o-rings and the orifice tube while you're in there.

^^ the sound is only when the i have the ac off.. soon as i turn the ac on the comp kicks on and the sound goes away...

i heard from 2 GREAT mechs that some brands of ac comps dont get the air cold as the oem does... thats what i was thinkn of just repairing it or getn a used oem..

That's what the Bonne did. Although I suspect that the noise is just less prevalent when it's engaged, not completely gone.

Don't know about the aftermarket units, as we used an OEM Delco unit. Quiet as can be and the vent temp stabilized at 38* in Park/Idle at full oper. temp with the outside temp being 85*. Not too bad.

coming from a truck mechanic i would just replace the compressor. you said that it sat for 2 years. i would also replaced the dryer to. have the system charged by the pros with a real A/C machine. our trucks at work have 2 A/C systems on the. get alot of experience on them in the summer

That's the aluminum cylinder that is about the size of a 24oz beer, should be near/under the airbox area. Has 2 lines that run into it from the compressor. Some people may call it an accumulator. Heard it both ways.

no you have to get a new one. they have desiccant in them like the little packs in the beef jerky packs. when it gets exposed to air it sucks the moisture out of the air and the desiccant no worky anymore. just have to replace with new. get one from carquest or napa. stock replacements.
