Ok my moms car is an 02 GP gt 3.8l non supercharged, it recently started a nasty valve train noise, seems like it isn't getting oil up in the heads. The car only has 77k (i know that don't mean anything) and started doing the noise intermittently. First time she told me it was making a noise now I started the car and it was quiet as can be. She told me it came back a day or 2 later and it sounds like from both heads, the rear sounds slightly louder. Also now it does it every time it sits. I even had it sitting inside the heated shop last night and still did it

What i've done so far: Oil change with 10w30 w/ 75% of a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer, while i had the filter off i blew compressed air through the filter housing out the pickup to make sure nothing was blocking it.

I started the car and after about 2 minutes the noise went away and i could see a little oil flowing in the head through the oil fill, not as much as i thought it would be but i havn't played with these motors too much yet so i'm not sure. Almost sound like a lifter losing its prime? Once it gets passed the 2 minutes or more it runs beautiful.

Thank you for your time for reading and please any ideas post them!! Or even similar problems.

Sounds like you have a lifter bleeding down and is noisy until it pumps back up. Either that or its sticky. My buddy w/ an 99 Camaro V6 has the same issue.

I ran some Seafoam in the oil and he drove it about 100 miles with it in the motor before changing oil and it has quieted it down significantly. Almost to the point where it doesn't do it at all unless it's like -10 outside.

I know the GM dealers have something similar w/ their BG engine flush treatment. Might give that a try. Also, be sure you're not using a Fram oil filter.

They are made with inferior components, and many people have reported more valvetrain noise on startup with these filters. They use cardboard endcaps which can easily leak and cheap bypass valves which are known to stick open. From what I've read/heard around other forums besides this one is that the only Fram that is worth anything is the "Extended Guard", not to be confused with their Extra Guard filters. Personally I'm not willing to risk my engine to a $6 filter to find out, so I stick with WIX.

You could get lucky and run them without a problem, but knowing that there are better choices for the same money, why take a chance? I'd go with an AC Delco, Purolator or WIX filter for the same money as these are solidly built filters.

    Just my .02

Yea, I'd bet that $6 filter would go into bypass after 100 miles, lol...

Man, those things are high up there. But that $13-$16 is still cheaper than a new engine. Can't imagine what they get for syn. oil either.

I ended up determining it was the lifter. Each time i started it the noise goes away quicker, this morning was gone before i could even get out and to the front of the car. Shes driving it again so im hoping the noise will eventually go away. I will have to try the seafoam if it doesnt.

Far as the fram filter goes, ive seen a napa display with a wix filter and a fram filter both cut open and the fram is so cheaply made its pathetic.

Claiming you can filter a certain size particle is useless.

claiming you can filter 99% of **** under multiple passes is also useless.

if you can filter most of it the first time then you win.

    A filter should filter right?

correct. but its going to get anything big out of the oil for the most part, unless its clogged. as long as it and the oil is changed often its going to be clean though unless theres something wrong with the motor.

this is the reason i actually plan on a bypass filtering system on my truck. but thats another topic

k&n is good, but not all parts stores have it. most parts stores have the wix brand because they cover all filteres rather than just oil and air

I had the same problem on the GT I used to have. Lots of valve clatter for the first 2-5 minutes after a cold start. I changed all the lifters and it went away. Three of them were soft.

2002 GTP: GMPP Sway Bars, BMR trailing arms, KYB AGX/Vogtlands, 12" brake upgrade
    Modified SSAC headers, K&N Intake, 3.4 MPS, S1X, Gen V, 104's, HPTuned.
