Just talked my brother into purchasing a 2001 special edition GT Coupe as a spare vehicle to his 2007 Maxima. Picked it up yesterday with 100,412 on the odometer, unmolested mint condition.

I have a spare L67 laying around so I said I would do a winter project with him and top swap it. My brother has put aside roughly 2 grand for this project and I want to have all my ducks in a row before I tear it apart.

I foresee getting headers, intake, porting the S/C,TB,& possibly the heads, rockers, exhaust, and obviously a pulley drop.

My problem is tuning.. I don't know how nor do I know anyone who does... so everything I do will have to work with a caned tune. I'm thinking to go with a custom INTENSE tune, what do you guys suggest?

Also any other mod suggestions before we begin so it can all be tuned at the same time?

I'll get some pics of the car later today or tomorrow when I see him... the car is sweet, I'm Jealous!

Ull need injector connectors, some people dont know about them. Why not just swap the whole L67 if you have it? If he is spending $2k and you are giving him all the parts, then there is definitely enough money there for a cam.

cam + top swap = 280 WHP if you play it right.

Headers would be needed as well.

As a rule of thumb, most top swaps require a custom tune.

Porting the TB will require a custom tune as well.

If you touch the heads then you REALLY want to cam it. If its a DD, VS cam + 1.7's would work well.

Heads can be had for 600, gaskets are typically 300-500.

Cam is 500-600, rockers another 400, tuning is 200 for a street tune.

Headers are what, 220 shipped now? Maybe less?

If that L67 runs, it'd be cheaper to use that if you weren't going to get heads.

If you were going to do heads, use the L36 in the car and cam that.

Well the L67 has a bad lower end so that's why we're going the top swap route.

So I'm thinking of going this route...
    *Ported Blower
    *VS Cam
    *1.7 Rockers
    *Headers
    *Intake
    *Exhaust
    *3.4 Pulley
    *MSD Coils w/ 10.3mm wires
    *AL104s

now again tuning, where can I get a caned tune for a set up like this? Does Reptile do mailorder tunes?

Any other ideas, again want to plan this out then in a couple of weeks order everything and once I have everything go to town one weekend.

You dont really need the cat-back(stock is good enough), MSD coils are worse than stock i hear, and i bet stock wires will be just as good. Might want to upgrade valve springs. Depending on the heads, you might want to have the valve seats reground. someone else chime in here...

if you get the ZZP valve seals and ZZP modded retainers you can run that on stock heads.

If not, get the valve guides milled 0.100".

Just run stock coils, they're better.

If I decide to not go cam or ported heads... and just go the rockers route.... whats better?

The 1.9 modified rockers or the 1.8 aluminum roller rockers?

Obviously I would go 1.95s but I'm thinking of keeping the stock springs and retainers. So with that in mind.. modified 1.9s or 1.8 roller rockers?

stock springs are prolly worn already.

    Higher ratio would be better.

Ok so after some more thought I think I'm going this route... most cost efficient and leaving some cash for appearance mods...

    *1.95 rockers
    *105# springs and retainers
    *Ported Blower and LIM
    *Headers
    *Intake
    *Colder T-Stat
    *AL104s

Now with that setup, what's the smallest pulley you think I can get away with? 3.4, 3.3, 3.2?

Oh yea and start at a 3.8 work your way around the 3.8 with a tune.. then drop pullets accordingly.. you dont need to rush anything there is no reason.. Take your time and make sure it all runs right for a while before going crazy with it.
