I get the power steering whine ONLY when the a/c compressor is running. any ideas as to why? It whines very loud too.

Check your belt to see if it is worn...Also, are you sure it isn't the A/C compressor itself?

Your belt is worn and its slipping with the extra load of the a/c

Also check your belt tensonor make sure it has proper tension. I had an issue on one of my cars where when I put the ac on you can see the belt jump up.
