Fast68 : yea, thats the main problem with oil these days. The oil becoming saturated with carbon. 8-10K seems to be the sweet spot.

One major benefit with synthetic is its harder to burn it which is a big benefit if running a turbo. I have a feeling it helps with the iron heads on the 3.8's which most likely cook the oil a little more then aluminum heads, however that is just an assumption on my part.

Oil analysis from Blackstone Labs indicated the oil was still good BUT the particulates in the oil was too high. This indicates that the oil filtering is the weak link in the engine, not the oil. So, I choose to run cheaper, name brand dino oil and change every 5,000 mainly to get a new filter in the loop. I can't get the benefit from extended intervals to compensate for the increased cost of the synthetic. Just my experience.
Wouldnt doing a filter change at about 5 k on synthetic fix this though Not saying its the best route but if filtering is the weak link

Sure, but if you have to get the drainpan out and get dirty to change the oil filter and add a half quart to make up the difference, you're most of the way towards doing the whole thing. The alternative is a bypass type oil filter system with better/larger filters, but I don't think there is a payback there either. I just don't think changing the spin-on filter alone is a great alternative. Again, all just my opinion (except the oil test, I think that's pretty much fact!).

I usually run Royal Purple oil and filters on my car, and easily go 10,000 on it with no problems, no I have never had the oil tested, but maybe next time I will so I can post some hard factual numbers.

Yeah, for fram it'd be 3980.

Not that anyone should ever run a fram.

PF52 is what the Delco number is for the 4.3. There is shorter one available as well, but can't remember it's number.

I have been running castrol syntec for a couple years now. Great synthetic oil in my opinion and will cost about $28 for the 5 qt jug at walmart and a fram tough guard filter. Oil change every 4000 so its costing me more, but its worth it. i hate walmart, but I always get oil there and thats the only isle i know where to find

Made the switch to synthetic about a week ago. Found Mobil 1 at Sams Club for $33 for six quarts with a Wix filter.

Would you fellas say that switching to syn. is good for all situations. I was going to change over my fiances 98 civic with about 130K miles on it. I've heard that it may not be a good idea due to potentially burning a lot of oil after the switch. Any opinions?
