When driving down the highway, I'll lose my RPM gauge but car will still run. However when I shut it off, it often will not start until the car is cold. Any thoughts.

Prior to replacing my ECM, the car would also shut down completely while driving down the highway.

Any help appreciated, Thanks in advance.

sounds like the ignition control module, or icm that folks talk about on here, its mounted under the coil packs, most auto parts should be able to test them for free. have them test it twice or three times so it gets hot. the rpm guage gets its signal from the icm

Thanks for the reply, but that is the part I just replaced, that I referred to as the ECM. However problem is still happening, the only difference is the car stays running now instead of shutting down whenever. However when I try to re-start the car it often won't re-start until cold.

So to recap, current problem consists of car losing RPM gauge while driving and trouble re-starting when I shut it off.

    Thanks for you help.

i would say something somewhere is shorting out. u can try the crank poosition sensor like liquidfire suggests. again the rpm signal comes from the ign control module.

Is your TCS light coming on when this happens? Mine has the same symptoms. Have to pump the gas to get it to restart. Pretty sure its the CPS from all the research I have done. Basically its going into a sort of limp mode when it happens and only getting partial signal from the cps.

Yes, my light is always on including the check tire pressure light, and ABS light. But last time these lights came on it was a wheel bearing sensor, which I replaced at a pretty steep cost. I had the codes read on my car and it is now showing that my other wheel bearing sensor is shot. However bearing is still fine, so for now really trying to fix other problem first in case it is something major. I have to question how much to put into a car that I have over 250,000kms on.

When I lose my RPM gauge, I will feel a jerk in the car and then everything is fine, until I shut it off. Then I sometimes (not always) have trouble starting it. Further to that sometimes my check engine light will also come on, but if I keep driving (it will eventually go out) weird.........

Thank you to everyone who replied. I finally found the time to change my Crank Position Sensor (CPS) and everything is back to normal and working fine.

    Thank You.
