    Hello,

Here is the problem I am having. I have a 2002 Grand Prix with a 3.8 non-supercharged engine with 165,000 mile on it. The problem I am having is when you are excellerating hard or just crusing down the road it jerks once in awhile. It does no feel like a tranny slipping but just a sudden jerk. It also seems to be using more fuel than usual. This has been going on for about a month and just last night the check engine soon light came on. The two codes are P0102 and a P0650. What would you recommend I do and what parts should be replaced? I am use to working on old cars so this is new to me. I usually wrench on my 1977 TA not on the newer stuff. Thanks

The P0102 code is for the MAF. You may need to replace it. One thing to try is to disconnect the MAF and see how it runs.

What does the MAF actually do? Can it affect the jerking motion of the tranny or is it mostly for fuel / air mixture?

It tells the computer how much air is coming into the throttle body.

Try cleaning the MAF sensor first, you may not need to replace it but if it is dirty it will not work correctly.........clean it gently with MAF sensor cleaner and get as much buildup out of the throttle body as possible........this should help a lot.

Last night I bought a can of CRC MAF cleaner and used it. I did try and run the car with the MAF unplugged and when I stepped on the gas the engine would try to stall and when I plugged it back in there was no stalling issue. So does this mean the MAF is in good working order?
