Thread: passenger side clunk axel or differential

This clunking ive been having between my LS and GS Regal has pushed me to believe its either the axel or differential.

I've changed the axels numerous times and now they're GM axels, transmission was rebuilt a lil over 3yrs ago. All other suspension components are less than 2yrs old.

So between the diff and axel on the passenger side which is more likely to make this clunk noise? You here it in reverse or drive when taking off or simply just at a stand still switching from reverse or drive.

No play with none of the motor mounts, all are good

What chal think?

Differential making the noise or the axel itself?

Have you jacked it up and checked for play? These trannys seem to have a lot of slop anyways, but I would try to find the noise with the front on stands. You said you replaced the axle numerous times so you can probably rule that out. Maybe the drive chain is stretched? Guess it could be the diff. They aren't hard to swap if you can pull one at a yard.

Tranny is only 3yrs old, it was rebuilt but im not sure if a differential is a component that is usually replaced when rebuilding a tranny(im not sure if its a definite component that gets changed or if it depends on whether its bad or not)

Have you checked your subframe bushing bolts to ensure there's no play there? As well your strut tower mounts are good and the spring rubbers are not worn?

These are more likely than a diff.

Subframe bolts are good and tight(mounts 2yrs old)

Strut mounts are a lil over 3yrs old installed them when i did the new struts. I suspected the strut mounts too, but the wierd thing is that it only happens when changing gears or from a dead stop & go and reverse.

Funny bc both my regals are making the same noise on the passenger side and it has nothing to do with the motor mounts or dog bones.

Differential has to have some play or this $400 GM axel has gone bad and or has play already

Just checked strut mounts and they're good......in fact whole strut assembly is in good shape

I would say slim. Its not like a rwd where it clunks if you don't have lash set right. They usually work fine or they shatter. Sway bar broke?

Edit: if you still think it is diff, pull one from a yard and swap it in. When you did axle you were only about 7 bolts from it.

Oh and about the airbag light, continues to come on never really stop even after the lil trick reset i did

Right, but u also said its not my axel. Suspension is totally fine, theres nothing underneath with that much play to allow this clunk that im getting from a dead stop or just putting it into drive or reverse(only coming from passenger side
