My 1st post but I have been a member for a while and picked up some great tips....any help is appreciated.

I have a 1999 Grand Prix GT with 200,000 one owner miles. Regular 50,000 mile trans fluid and filter changes with no problems until recently. The last 3,000 miles or so, the transmission started acting funny at stops. It started with an occasional delayed shift back to 1st after coming to a stop with a noticeable "clunk". All other up and downshifts are fine. It progressed to now (still occasionally) when stopping at a light or making a low speed turn, it goes to neutral. Sometimes it will shift back into gear with a little throttle and sometimes it won't. When it's "stuck" in neutral, it doesn't matter where the shifter is moved, I've tried 3, 2, 1, R and none work predictably. (I read where 2 or 1 is supposed to override a band problem I think, but it doesn't) It has always eventually gone back in gear and shifts fine in traffic for 50-100 miles before it does it again. The fluid is always clear red with no odor or shavings in pan. Dropped the pan and filter last week and all still looks good.

Any ideas? Since it shifts so smooth (most of the time) and doesn't make any noise, I didn't think it was a mechanical problem but maybe a solenoid issue???

Thanks for any help!
