Which shift kit is the best (and cheapest) for the HD trans.
I have heard that the Transgo kit is the best one to get. As far as cheepest idk.
cheapest is go to ace and buy the shims that zzp's kit comes with for .30 cents each, 2 1" shims and 2 3/4" shims one inch on the back side of the piston 3/4 on the out side, the transgo kit is good stuff tho i have all the springs from the trans go kit with larger shims from ace in my turbo car trans and it shifts nice and hard
Yea I love my trans go kit. Shifts are firm and quick
The best kits are going to have stiffer springs in the accumulators, or shims that go under the springs, but they are going to cost more. When spacers are used in accumulators, the kits are cheaper, but are harder on the "hard parts" in the transmission. Springs cost more money than a little spacer, but a spring gives more "coushion" to the clutches wich will save wear on the hard parts. Just remember that the cheapest are not the best, and the best are not the cheapest.
I was able to re-programm the computer to adjust the shift times for my GTP to get crisper quicker shifts, Personally I would not want them much more than they are now (I'm getting older) LOL. When I was younger, I loved feeling those shifts that was like getting kicked in the pants, but now not so much, just wanted to reduce slippage and heat, and so far it hase been doing good. Hope this helps.
I'm thinking I'm gonna go for the TransGo kit. I can grab it off amazon with the shifter I want (B&M hammer) and pay no shipping, so it's a pretty good gig.
Transgo is way to go I love it in mine.
I put my transgo in months ago and havent noticed much of a difference. Then again, my trans always shifted fine. But idk if thats cause i had the ZZP 1.0 PCM almost a year prior to the transgo kit.
Probably the tune. When I installed my trans go and disconnected the battery to reset the learned shifts it was definitely more noticeable
Installed the Transgo in my car two days ago.... WOW. Swear by it, best for the $$$ Driving my car normal, I can't tell much of a difference in firmness but can for sure tell a difference in quickness. No drag or delay at all, just right in gear and quick. As for racing the car and WOT pulls, it feels awesome. Not so harsh where you think it's slamming, but it feels firm and is quick. Other "adjustable" kits you can up it more and have that "slamming in gear" feeling. IMO, the Transgo is perfect in all aspects.
I have a thrasher shift kit and love it
I've got a combo of wbody store and Lowes bought shims and the way I have it my shifts can definitely be felt. At times I think I made it too rough but I do enjoy my snappy shifts and a lil quickness to it as well.
Is there any way I can beef up the TransGo kit for even firmer shifts?
you go to the hardware store and buy larger shims and use the springs out of the transgo kit
I just installed the intense kit. This kit is for reg trans 245mm or the bigger torque converter (258mm) which is the HD trans I believe. You install bigger and more springs in the pistons plus a spring spacer and pin spacers. The kit also includes new seals, filter, sand paper, assembly grease and scuffing pad for the bores. The instructions could have been better but i figured it out (would be a snap if i did another one) like the responses from trango users it makes a big difference in throttle response and less lag time with down shifts. The higher rpm shifts are quicker but not hard by any means. Im installing a performance shifter and getting a tune so im expecting firmer shifts in the future. I think the intense kit was just under a hundred bucks.

TMS, I'm getting a B&M Pro Ratchet, a tune, and the TransGo shift kit, so it should be pretty firm.
