sorry guys.. new to the site and my registration email finally came in this morning. I've been waiting 2 days for it to come into my email and now i'm running late to work.. so no time to introduce myself, but i'll do it tonight i swear.. but i just got a 2001 Grand Prix GT w/ a 4sp auto.. my issue is that from first to second it has started to "slip" sort of. it will shift out of first, rev up about 500 rpms for just a sec, then go into second.. it occasionally does it in other gears but almost always in 1st to 2nd.. but still not always. and also when i get cruising on the hwy no matter wether it's 55 or 75 mph i will start fluctuating between 2000 and 2500 rpms.. i can watch the tach jump up and down. you can hear it in the exhaust and feel it in the car when this happens... again, not always, but fairly regularly.. I have checked the fluid.. good fluid level and good fluid..(red and no burnt smell) also have yet to get it scanned at a shop but as far as i know not throwing any codes... any ideas? any help greatly appreciated

First off, welcome to the community.

We have a transmission expert/guru here by the name of Trannyman95. Hopefully he will see this and step in here and give you some insight. In the meantime, you can visit his website at Triple Edge Performance - Home Page and he has some info there about some of the problems the 4T65E transmission have and that may give you some insight until he has the opportunity to post here. Good Luck.

He stays pretty busy. He has an awesome reputation and is probably the nations best 4T65E transmission builder and on top of that, just recently had a new baby. So Im sure he is probably a little sleep deprived. He'll check in and see your post and will probably make a reply. Hang in there and I hope it all turns out well for ya.

It sounds like you have a few pressure related problems causing multiple symptoms. Bouncing rpms on the highway is pretty common with the transmissions when the mileage gets up there a bit. On my info page i mention this problem, the link is below in my sig. As far as the rpm flare up on the shifts that also sounds like a pressure related problem. A bad pressure control solenoid can cause all of your problem, but there is likely more going on than that and must be properly diagnosed with a scan tool and pressure gauge if possible buy a good diag guy. Most shops honestly try to sell a rebuild more often than a repair on these transmissions because there are a number of problems that add together to cause these problems and it is often necessary to tear into the trans for an inspection or repair and the bill can add up fast!

Ok.. First off, BIG Thanks Tman for your page.. I figured out what the tach issue was just from reading it.. one of the most informative pages i've read in a while. So here's my next question? how big of a problem is this for me? this is my DD and my only mode of transportation at the moment w/ a 30 mile one way trip to work.. Is this pretty serious and in dire need of repair or can it wait a while? There are a couple of tranny shops here, but I dunno anybody I can REALLY trust for tranny problems.. Aamco any good? i have heard good things.. Or is this something I could do myself? I've changed out a few trannys but never rebuilt one. Not to mention i've never done one on a FWD vehicle. Again, thanks for all the help guys. Now time to go to the Noob section and introduce myself properly
