I have had this car for about a year now and to start with it had a lag downshifting into 3rd which was eventually cured with a shiftkit fluid filter change and higher line pressure...btw there was small pieces of brass in the pan when I did the fluid...now a new problem has reared its ugly head...only happens on my way home from work prob 5 to 10 mins into my drive home I have to sit at a light and lately when I start moving it will seem fine then all of a sudden it bangs into gear...weird part is it is already in gear because I am moving but must be slipping a little then bangs completely into gear couple seconds after I have started moving...so should I just start tearing it apart now or wait till it blows up? I am a Hydraulic Mechanic so I have most all the tools and shop needed to rebuild

I just did it two weeks ago. Its not fun... but you can do it. I think it will take you a day to pull the trans, break it down and inspect the internals for what you need to buy. I know you think your going to just buy a rebuild kit and some common failure items and you will just have them ready so you can rebuild immediately... but I will say that is a fools plan. Whats really going to happen is your going to open it and find something unexpected... what that is, i dont know, maybe you break something (wire harness, thrust washer, etc.). Maybe you find something you didnt see coming(4th clutch shaft teeth getting ready to strip out). Whatever, the thing is if this happens, then you must order parts and wait for them to be delivered. OR if you have a local tranny shop, you can get them immediately, but thats going to cost double what you can get things for online. So, then it might be extra money and extra days before you can reassemble.

The question you must ask yourself is this.... Are you willing to accept that this could take alot longer than you think it will? Are you willing to accept this might cost more money than you planned it would? Are you willing to accept that there is great potential for error that would cuase you to have to re-do? If you are willing to accept these risks and conditions, and you have the tools and space to do it, then you have a green light. Do it. its just nuts and bolts if you think about it.

If these things seem like you cannot accept them, a week without this car, extra hundreds of dollars, redoing it if something was done wrong, then you should consider alternatives. Good luck. you should download a copy of the repair manual for this trans from ATSG 4T65E to see what its going to take. also check out this link... Illustrated 4T65E Rebuild : General Chat

The choice is yours... this is just what its going to look like.

i dont want to jinx you, but mine did that exact same thing, and within a weeks time it would not move hardly at all. each day it got worse and worse. when i tried to drive it up my driveway to my garage, it was requiring like 4K RPMs to make it creep along. I was hoping to god the whole time it didnt slam in gear when i was getting right up to my garage!

i am in my trans right now and i know every problem is different but in my cause it was a input mechanical diode and the clutches where burnt. so i figured i love the car enough to keep it so since the trans is apart i will upgrade everything i possibly can.then i know my trans should last a bit longer than stock.and the rebuild kit if a fairly decent price considering what all u get 4T65E High Performance Complete Kit 2003+ GM application
