2000 gtp will not engage in drive but can be manually shifted into D at the right speed. tranny slipping slightly in all gears except reverse. still have all gears available but wont shift in automatically. any suggestions on what to repair since i dont have enough cash to do a full rebuild at this time. this ismy first time doing auto tranny work but considering i cant afford to have it rebuilt i thought i would give it a shot. got to learn sometime.

Sounds like your forward band snapped. You need a rebuild or a junkyard unit.

there isnt any play in the forward band and there where no pieces in the pan which as far as im aware is the main indicator of a bad fb. could it still be snapped or is there another possible issue

It's a bad trans lol. It's probably completely roasted inside. What's your location? I had mine built to hell for 650 bucks in parts and labor. Got a good deal.

i still need to get the tranny off mine which i have never done b4. on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is this to do, honestly. my mechanic is obviously telling me not to do it myself but to broing it to him so he can do it for damn near a grand.

Im new here too lol but ive been around these cars for a while now.

If you just wanna bull**** about it that's cool too I'm off work for a month or 2 so I'll do what I can to help.

It's only difficult because you need extra hands and gear like a cherry picker for instance.

It's fairly simple though, I can't imagine anyone not being able to do it that can do there own brakes lol.

    Like I said call/text I'll do what I can!

buy that car change the lower intake manifold gasket and enjoy. Guarantee that the headgaskets are fine.

Yeah..piston popped or intake gasket is likely the only issue on that GTP. Snatch it if it looks decent.

    On a trans swap.
