Hi, 01 grand prix 3.8 non-supercharged 4t65e. Started seeing problems, chainged oil, filter, and added lucas (helped till...
Trying to figure out if I got a car that was just beat on till the second gear clutches went out, or if this car has a bigger problem. The trans had been rebuilt before I got the car. (it has 210k on it.) Everything looks new, except the bottom stack of 2nd gear clutches. would engage 1st and reverse fine, but would shift from 1st to a dragging, sliding felling after 1st "let go". throw the shifter into 1 and 1st would grab hold good. All the clutches have raised spots. 3,4 and input clutches look new.
I ordered clutches, steels, molded piston, and a trans go shift kit. Is there anything else I'm missing I should be looking at?
    THANKS PHIL

PHil...where did you get those..meaning which clutch basket. You mention 1sts and bottom stack of 2nd clutchds. But the 2nds are in a housing all by themselves. The housing with two stacks is input/3rd aka 1st/3rd.

I've seen clutches/steels look just like that. Typically it's when the rebuilder follows the book and there's a lot of 2nd/3rd/4th gear changing. It tends to continually work over the 3rds. When there's a standard clutch stack, there's a lot of space and therefore more time engaging them.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

They all came from the 2nd clutch housing.
I got my atsg update manual and was reading on page 52 excessive clutch clearance. I'll make sure that's correct with the new parts and drill the spacer plate .010 and see what happens.

Pretty sure either the steels come in different thicknesses or the 4T60's steels did. So you shim it up a bit that way or add another steel etc. It's all good.
