You know it just so happens that I have the same car and went thru the same thing which affects just the 2001. Our cars came with one specific trans for that 2001 year and just for that year. GM changed to a different setup for 2002-2003 years. I believe there is a work around with the connector plug with splicing the old one in and probably the trans line connectors you need to convert them. I actually searched high & low for a 2001 just so I wouldn't have to deal with that stuff.
Any '97-'02 GTP transmission will work...it is the '03's that are different
And...the only differences in the 97-02 years is some had click style line connections, some had threaded. If you swap the lines, you can esily remedy the issue.
The external park neutral switch is not a big deal. If your car needs one, add it from your old one. If it needs internal, I've got a link on how to make it an external.
The diff to output shaft was slightly different in 97 than 98+, but not that anyone who isn't opening it up woudl notice.
