I have a question for all you transmission experts. I am planning to change out the filter and fluid on my 99 GT and my brothers 03 GT. I have done it before on my 99 and I figured I would do both at the same time as regular maintenance. I searched on here and on other sites researching the swap to dexron VI. I have read good things and bad things about switching over to dex VI. I was wondering if any of you guys who have switched over have had any issues?

    Specs on both cars.
    99 GT with ~86K miles
    03 GT with ~65K miles

    Thanks,
    Mike

I do not claim to be an expert on these trans. but I switched to Dex VI when I put a used trans. in my 00 GT. This was out of a 99 GP GT w/ approx. 100K on it. Since the original Dex III fluid was still nice and red, I went ahead and completely drained the TC while I had it out and then dropped the pan as well. Since I installed all new lines and a new rad., I would think I got 99.9% of the old fluid out.

Since the install, I've put about 5K on it and it hasn't had an issue yet and the fluid still looks good. Shifts about as good as these slush-boxes get I guess. No idea on trans. temps though. No gauge for that.

I switched from III to VI at 123K (granted only 5K ago) with only doing a pan drop and still drives fine. So theoretically I have Dex 4.5....
Its just a car.......with rust and dreams for the future!!!!

I never said it was BAD^^. Dave just told me not to use dex VI. Give him a call tommrow and ask him why. I would have to say the newer cars have different clutch material? IDK

From what I have read dex VI actually lets the trans slip a little more, but also keeps temps down some how.

ha! so which is it then, III or VI??

and when doing a pan drop a new pan gasket is mandatory, yes?

you dont need a new gasket if you have the original one that is rubber. I would go with a synthetic dex III or multi vehicle fluid.

I contacted Dave to see what he says. Hopefully he chimes in here as well if he gets a chance.
