I know a lot of you on these forums are much more comfortable working on cars than I am and have more tools, but I'm not confident I can do these repairs, and I live in an apartment and have one car, so I have been taking it to a dealer for repairs.

I just got back from a trip that's about 200 miles each way and on the way back, about an hour into the 4 hour drive, my car started jerking like a horse trying to buck. I also noticed that the acceleration was not as smooth as it was before. I was able to drive it home with the service engine soon light on (it turned on about the same time this problem started.)

I was able to borrow a computer and I got the following two codes:

    Po742(pd) torque

    Converter clutch
    Solenoid circuit

I've been calling dealerships and transmission shops and trying to do research online to see what I should do - Can anyone give me any advice? I would greatly appreciate it, as I need my car up and running, but I don't have a great deal of money.

    Thank you in advance

P0742 is a TCC Stuck ON code and typically happens from a clogged up TCC solenoid but can be a number of other things also. I have info on this on my info page in the link in my sig. Replacing the solenoid often helps the problem BUT debris is the cause more times than not as this solenoid rarely fails on its own so a new solenoid is just going to do the same thing down the road. The trans will definately feel terrible when the code sets. It can be a tricky problem to tackle and the majority of the causes are torque converter slippage or over-pressure problems that can be fixed by upgrading a few parts, but once the damage is done it generally means a new torque converter, valve body, and possibly other parts.

Thanks, I ended up having the dealer fix it and after talking to several auto shops and tranny shops I think my car should be good now.

Replaced the shifting solenoids, it shifts very smooth now, better than when I first go the car. I can hardly tell when it shifts by feel now, so I'm pretty happy about it.
