ok so I have a few questions. I just bought a 98 GTP for 800 dollars car is black on black leather with the factory chrome wheels. I called the guy because it said for parts or whole car to call for details and 800 seemed to good to be true well I looked at the car drove fine everything worked it needed valve cover gaskets and the superchargers making noise but works. So I figure now I have extra money I can order ported supercharger and smaller pulley nice. Well I also know they say the trannys are known on these cars. Lets just say after 4 hours of driving around and beaten on it a little it started to clunk then slip only under hard acceleration Im pretty pissed to say the least but not really because the car was kinda a good price and I have some money to do a tranny seeing the car only has 132k I wanna keep it. So I need to know if you guys think I just got one with a bad tranny or are they all junk and weak? and I might buy a regal gs for parts are the trannys the same ? and if not how much does a built tranny go for and do you guys have a step by step for tranny swaps

    thanks so much,

    Nick

    sorry for all the questions

Hey man thanks alot for the advice, I changed the tranny filter and added new fluid with some lucas and now the tranny doesn't slip. The only thing it still does sometimes is when I punch it goin from 3rd to 4th it like bounces rev limiter and doesnt go to 4th unless I let off a little. 4th is like the only gear it shifts kinda weird but all the others are mint. I also checked the check engine light that came up and it said like torque converter stuck on and shift selinoid which im confused about cause its fine now so does that mean eventually its gonna go and im just good for now ? Also I have a regal gs can I use the shift selinoid from that tranny ? and are the regal gs trannys the same as gtps

    thanks, Nick

    sorry for all the questions
hey nick ive got this little list i got from doing mine.

    Disconnect battery
Unhook and remove shifter cable/bracket and electrical connections to trans on driverside (3 connectors)
    Support the motor from above
Jack the front of the car up darn high. High enough for the trans to fit out of the wheel well/under the car.
    Drain the trans fluid
Pull the axles (I suggest popping out the balljoints)
Unbolt the power steering rack from the subframe and ensure it's free of the frame
Unbolt the trans mount from subframe
    Remove starter
Unbolt torque converter to flywheel bolts
Unhook trans cooler lines at transmission

(Next four steps from passenger wheel well)
Reach behind the ps pump and remove the trans to engine bracket
    Unhook VSS sensor
Remove trans to engine bolt on back side of motor. (about 4 feet of extensions and an 18mm socket)
Unclip PS cooler lines from subframe

Unbolt subframe (it's not as heavy as it looks)
Move subframe out from under car and position jack under trans.
Unbolt trans to engine bolts from above.
Have one person steady trans and other wiggle it free, lower, pull trans dispstick tube and remove.

    Reverse steps for install.
Going back to stock *GRANT built trans BLOWN w/17k*

before you drop a pulley size please read the safely modding your 3800 thread in the general tech section. There is lots of info there and it might save you from having to replace your motor. Whatever you do, do not get a PCM from ZZP(erformance) as many motors have blown with this PCM installed at the time. Sorry to be not much help about the tranny's. They should be pretty much the same tranny but you would have to look at the tags and compare them to see if they are the same or not. Not sure about the solenoid, if it is the same or not... If you need a new tranny, the best ones for our cars come from Triple Edge Performance-they are a vendor here as well. Maybe Dave the trannyman could answer your questions for you. If you have questions, usually he is very willing to help whenever he can.

I wanna run a 3.4 pulley so I think, with like whatever basic mods I can do without goin crazy.

best mail order pcm can be found at 3800performance.com These are actually the tunes done by DHP and there is no one complaining about them, which can not be said for any other mail order tune out there. This is the safest tune for not blowing your motor that you can get off the shelf...

Don't waste your money on the MSD coils. They don't help our cars and the Stock coils are awesome on our cars. The MSD coils can fail too. Seen it happen a few times. Also you should always scan to see if your car will accept a smaller pulley before you go slapping one on. You will probably need more mods than you just mentioned. I don't see that you mentioned getting a new intake? You need the car to breathe in just as well as it exhales.

Search Homemade FWI or buy a pre-made off the shelf kit like Wizaird, JMB, ect...

For what its worth with the money you could save by not buying the MSD Coils and not buying a downpipe you could afford Headers and skip the whole downpipe thing and have a much greater setup.

Just a few ideas there for ya.

PM me if you have any questions.

you will need either a plog to go with the downpipe or the headers to replace them both before you will be able to drop to the 3.4.....otherwise you will be knocking. And as mentioned above you will need an air intake for max gains...
