Ok, so my 98 GTP has some trouble.... You pull out and it seems to run ok, but at about 60, its like she runs out of gears.... Has a check engine light, have not had a chance to read the DTC yet... Previous owner said it was a solinoid somehwere internally... Any ideas? It seems to upshift too fast, and then it takes like 5400rpm to stay at 55-60...

I would start by having the code checked out and post back with what it is. If you are spinning 5400 rpm at 55-60mph then you are in 2nd gear. A shift solenoid is likely not the cause of your problems. If you have 1st and 2nd gear ok then it is not a shift solenoid. If it wont shift past 2nd gear, which sounds like the case, then you probably have severely burnt 3rd gear clutches or a bad 3rd sprag which will both prevent 3rd gear from working.

You cant easily use an 04 trans in your car, and on top of that you cant use a CompG tapshift trans in a non tapshift car. That is a great deal on a trans hands down, but it wont do you any good. 03+ is internally different electrically and the manual valve section in the valve is specific for the tapshift transmissions and not compatible with non tapshift computers/cars. A few guys have used an 03 PCM in their 98-02 car to use an 03+ trans so electrically it is compatible but you still run into the tapshift issue. It also has 3.29 gearing which will set an incorrect gear ratio code but that is the least of your worries. The cooler line fittings are also different and being it is an 04 case there are no earlier style fittings that will work in that case to work with your existing cooler lines.

Is the ID tag still on the trans and if so what is the code on it? This trans will definately not work correctly without throwing codes without at least an 03 pcm being in your car, but again if it is a tapshift trans you are going to run into more problems.

Ok, the code my factory trans is throwing is a P0756. Shift Solenoid B CKT Performance or stuck OFF... Any ideas??? Which solenoid is causing the prob, how hard is it to get to? I would think its right inside the pan... Can i use the solenoids from the CompG trans and see if that fixes the prob? I am guessing if it doesnt fix it then Ill have to check the valve body. Past that, I am not sure if I wanna venture further in, sence I am not that familiar with trans.

I think you misunderstood what I was asking, what is the ID code on the tag on the back side of the transmission case? There is a page on my website that explains this if you are unsure of where to look.

As far as the trouble code you found by scanning the car, code P0756 for 2-3 solenoid performance when triggered will put the car in 3rd gear, no tcc, max line pressure. I am yet to see changing a shift solenoid actually get rid of a shift solenoid performance code and often this code has pretty much anything to do with the trans except for the solenoid being bad. Basically the pcm commands a shift and it doesnt happen. It runs an electrical test on the solenoid and that passes (or it would throw a 2-3 solenoid electrical code) so it assumes the solenoid physically cant do its job. You have to remove the side cover of the trans to get to any of the solenoids so this means dropping down the trans and is a lot of work and again I doubt replacing the shift solenoid will fix the trans as these solenoids very rarely fail and it is likely something damaged inside the transmission or the valve body has stuck valves which wont allow it to shift.

Nice... well the trans I got is junk anyways... I pulled the pan and there are huge metal shavings in the pan that look like this brillo pads. SO I am pretty sure its done for. So, if it works or not, I dont even think is the issue anymore. LoL. I guess I have to look into a rebuild kit, or getting a used trans. I was gonna just replace the solenoids but sence they dont fail often, prob wont do any good. Can the valve body and valves be cleaned to restore normal operation? Thank you for your help btw. i appriciate it. I dont do trans. I can build motors all day but trans is still over my head.
