Recently the transmission in my 2000 GT has began shifting really hard. It does not do it all the time though, it is pretty random but now appears to do it after heavy acceleration. If I keep the RPM's low it seems to be ok but once it starts shifting hard it doesn't stop even at low RPM's. Then once it sits parked somewhere and I drive it again it acts fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Same issue on my wife's 02 GP GT: Shifts fine when cold, but after a warm up say 20 30 miles or so it shifts hard between 1&2, and really noticeable between 2&3. Had Trans back flushed at about 55,000 and now at 65,000. I hope it is something simple like a solenoid. I guess there are 2 solenoids on these: One is pressure control and the other is like an on/off switch. I am still searching for info.

I have a friend who is one of the best mechanics in town, and he said change the filter, fluid and clean the valve body etc. Give it a few hundred miles and see if it doesn't stop:
Well; it stopped immediately... It has only shifted hard about 3 times since, but after 250 miles we are still waiting for it to work the fresh fluid thru it. This is a good place to start for anyone having this issue... He recommends skipping the tyranny flush.
You can listen to his advice on WJR radio on Saturday mornings on "The Car Show"

Does anyone know if these solenoids could be causing the issue?

It's the pressure control solenoid. or epc solenoid. if you search you will find a couple threads on them. I just had mine replaced about a month ago.

my gp did the same thing,I would get it to a tranny place and have them check it I ended up needing 4th gear(OD) but the Trassmission place will let you know if it is the solenoid.

Could anyone tell me where the pressure solenoid is and how to get access to it?

When scanned the car will probably produce a code 1811 for the max adapt of he pressure solenoid. To get to the solenoid you have to remove the side cover of the trans. It involves quite a bit of work such as removing the axle, unbolting mounts and dropping the cradle down. I had a shop do mine because I didn't feel it was worth tackling on the ground.

I tried my SCT handheld but received an error code when trying to read codes. So I want to ask you if the "Service Engine" light needs to be on for this code to show. My 02 GP GT does not have a "Service Engine" light triggered on the dash yet.
I am not sure why my code reader would not work... I do use it to upload custom tunes in my Ford pickup, but it should still read codes from other vehicles.

Mine did not produce a check engine light. You can find more info on trannymans page as well.

Another quick question regarding my issue. I recently had to replace the lower tranny cooler line because it was busted pretty good and leaking a lot. Is it possible with the line being replaced that the computer is taking some time getting used to the pressure change? And that could cause the random hard shifting. Just a thought.

The shift feel should not be random. As mentioned above you should have the car diagnosed to test the pressure control solenoid operation as it will definately cause your problems and is very common to fail on the 97-02 years. Code P1811 will not set the check engine light and most cheap code readers wont pick it up either as it is often only stored in the pcm code history and requires a scanner that can read history codes to find it. A reputable trans shop should be able to properly diagnose your problem with a scan tool and even better with a pressure gauge hooked up but most shops are well aware of the problem and may just tell you the solenoid is the cause even without looking at the car.

My first step is having the filter changed and new fluid today: Will test drive and see if we can reproduce the hard shifting. If not, I am not sure which way to go...

    Update:

Had the filter changed and new fluid added. Mechanic said filter was dirty and that a plug had a lot of material attached to it. He recommends a filter change and new fluid over back flush.
So far so good after 200 miles.

Took my 99 GT to a trans place today. They picked up codes P0102 and 1811. 1811 not being surprising since that is the problem (hard/late shifting). They said "0102 has nothing to do with the transmisssion." Its an older car with 110k miles so i'm not ruling out two completely unrelated problems. But is there any chance the two could be related. Their first recommendation is to take it to the dealership to have the computer updated (as its cheaper and probably needs to be done anyway) and there is a 25% chance that could fix the problem, if it doesn't its more likely a body-valve issue costing between 1200-1800 USD to fix with labor at 90/hour, or potentially needing a complete overhaul at 2000-2500 USD. Does this seem reasonable?
