    Hi,

I replaced my broken forward clutch band (4T65E, in car replacement), took it for a drive and everything seemed to work great. I could hear it shifting through all of the gears, etc. I went to test manual shifting and the lever would not go to 3rd. Then realized it wouldn't go into neutral or anything else. Couldn't find a cliff to drive it off of, so just drove home depressed.

Popped the shifter cable off and it moves fine, but the transmission gear selector is locked up hard. Took the whole thing back apart (up to the trans side cover) and it looks like there is a long rod that goes from the selector mechanism clear to the back of the transmission. I didn't remove this rod and don't remember doing anything with it, but it seems to be the problem. At least from what I can tell so far. I'm fine with taking everything back apart, but I don't know what I did wrong, so I'm sure I would make the same mistake again. Any ideas what is causing this problem, or what I missed?

Sorry to bug everyone with such a vague question. It's pretty clear I shouldn't have gotten into this repair, but I'm kind of stuck now.

    Thanks

A couple more questions. Is the manual valve (that goes in the valve cover) directional? In other words, is there a top and a bottom or can it be connected to the manual valve rod either way? Also, if one of the valve cover gaskets got misaligned could it cause a problem like this?

I don't believe so, BUT, it is relieved on one side. This is allow the shift linkage to pass through and sit flush. So, not directional per se, but it does only go one way. I suppose if put in incorrectly, it could cause it to bind in the bore.

Not likely. You would see a problem with function, like not shifting or something like that.

Dang. I bet that is my problem. The manual valve rod and spring didn't feel quite right when I put it back together, but I didn't really know what it was suppose to feel like. How far into the bore is that spring suppose to go under normal operation? Mine didn't seem like it would go in at all. At least not smoothly.

Kinda what I was leaning towards.

It goes in pretty far when you manually shift 3-2-1.

Thanks for your help again! That was it. I had the manual valve in upside down, with the rod connected to the non-indented side. I flipped it over, re-attached it the right way, and now everything is working great. - Thanks

Yeah. You know how the manual valve has that half cut/relief clearance to accept the manual valve link...

My assumption was that he put the link on the unrelieved side of the valve. Which caused it to stick out beyond the major diameter of the valve bore. So, all was well in P,R,N,D, but when he went to jam it into D3 (and force the manual valve deeper into the bore) the link and link retainer crashed into the channel plate.

For anyone that might find this thread later, this is a very good explanation and describes my problem exactly. The re-assembly instructions that I was following kind of rushed over this step (connecting the rod to the manual valve), and somehow the purpose of that recess didn't jump out at me. Seems obvious enough now...

Hindsight is always so clear lol. We've all made mistakes and thank you for making sure yours is clear and easy for the guy that does it next. I have tons of write ups..because I wanted others to learn as I had.
