OK, so Dan finished the swap earlier today. Trans came from a 2007 GXP with what appeared to be 80k miles, but the trans has a GM Parts sticker on the side, so potentially it has been replaced?? It seems to be strong enough.

He ended up (by my request as this is my DD and I got the trans for $100 and figured I might as well chance it) having to cut a pretty sizable hole in the trans housing as the flywheel appeared to be too large and the starter would not clear the stock front manifold and likely the crossover. Once that hurdle was cleared, he then tuned the computer for the 2.93 gears (sad face, car is now noticeably less sprightly) and some custom line pressure adjustments. The result is drivable if slightly rough, although it's only been one day. When I first drove it shifts were slightly harsh and TCC was not terribly well-behaved, although it appears that the second drive I took tonight (first was earlier in the afternoon) was slightly better, likely it's still doing some learning. I'm not sure if the ECM tune would still require a TAPS relearn, but I didn't do one and likely it was done anyway since the ECM was disconnected during the swap anyway.

End result, the answer to my original question is, YES, but it does require some work. I now have a transmission with a large hole in the front. But I can drive my car again. These transmissions are either full of issues and flaky or rock-solid and dependable. My '97 GTP (from 200k to 260k - hard miles I put on it too) and my '02 40th GT (160k ish) were solid and dependable. The '01 Impala I bought my wife **** 4th gear and then something else ****ed up and it ended up having to be shifted into 1 to get off the line. This car was all sorts of ****ed but it was also messed up and likely had some redneck intuition applied to it. Dan found that the passenger side transmission bracket had R-U-N-N-O-F-T. Who knows if the previous owner did some shady work to get it running or what, but that was not the only thing missing or screwed up when I bought the car. I'll be getting that bracket installed pretty ****ing soon.
