So I have a 2000 gs regal supercharged 178,000. I'm driving about 30mph and get a hard yank next thing i pulled over about 3 blocks later and 3/4 ear will not engage. 1,2 and reverse works. Iv read and know its probably typical forward band. fluid was brown no shavings but I know its never been changed at-least since 129,000 when it was bought into family.

My bro has a supercharged motor and Trans sitting on the floor, we know the trans is good. He had a few minor mods done to the engine and a few to the trans but its been sitting for a couple years been driven only a handful of times. Fluid clean etc. As i'm separating his trans from his old motor i notice the torque converter is new, but its blue.

Obviously aftermarket, he says it may have been a stall convertor so I may not be able to use it. So my question is can i use it why or why not. Should I use my old one, and if not where or what route should I go in getting another one?

My Buick is all stock by the way.

Does the torque converter have any markings or stickers on it? All of the stock replacement TC's I've purchased have been blue, so that doesn't necessarily mean it has a higher stall.

Didn't know that about being blue....took a quick glance and I saw nothing stamped or engraved on it, maybe I need to take it off and further inspect the other side. But it was more like a quick thought because it was given to him buy the guy who did the mods.

I guess who knows then right....Ill try to get if off and see if there are any markings on the other side. Otherwise I guess i wont know.

Install and smile... even if the stall is a little different....it's not that much different.

I've pulled a lot of transmissions and only found one or two blue converters...

It's entirely possible that it had been replaced at some point. I mostly mention it to illustrate the point that a blue converter can still be a "stock" replacement.

I assumed there was a swap at some point...I've yet to see a factory sticker on a blue converter...

It pretty much looks exactly like your second picture Brandon. No markings or anything that distinguishes it. But thanks, now I know.

FWIW the factory always labeled parts...that way there was no question of what part was what.. every stock converter I pulled and could verify was stock... had the JTFM or whatever sticker specifying what it was.

Is there a torque spec for the torque converter bolts and trans to engine bolts?

    Iv'e see 46 and 47 foot lbs.

Having said that, I'm usually a big fan of the torque wrench, but both swaps I've done so far have just been goodn-tite.

    Cool I have torque wrench.

Thee plug in the trans under the powering steering pump. You can see it with the passenger side splash shield removed. Does it have to be unplugged before its pulled I cant really get my hand in there. I think its a push style clip plug.

you can actually see it in your first picture

You can swap the wheel speed sensor if that's easier for you. 10mm socket.

    Or,

There's a locking tab facing the rear of the vehicle inside that shroud. Pry it down with a small screwdriver while wiggling the plug.

C'mon.. it's a simple clip. get a good flashlight and make sure the safety is removed first.. You can do it

    Thanks

Yeah I got it once i figured out what direction it was facing i pushed the safety down.

Looks like the old trans has the clip, wiggle style trans line at the trans and

The replacement trans has the screwed in 16mm lines. How does that wrk?

One clips in, one screws in.

Swap the fittings. You will have two check balls by doing that though. You may want to pop the ball out of the push lock fitting.
