when i do this for people i actually like to begin with the hammer to get everything started. then i'll move to the roller to smooth it all out and finish it up.
and when i'm done with that i'll go back over it with the hammer and hammer down any spots that the roller couldn't get to.
I used a heat gun and a rubber mallet. Had a few beers to take the stress off. Worked fine.

I've done at least a dozen car's that way. Had a friend keep even heat on the panel with a good heatgun, and slowly work the fender. Out of all the car's i've done, i've never had a single problem with the paint chipping/flaking off due to a halfassed job. Sure a roller works, but is it worth buying one or renting one? Surely we all have a wooden bat in our homes somewhere. Take your time, dont rust it, and you wont have a problem
