On my 98 if you open the center armrest and pull out the tray that rests inside there you will find two 10mm bolts at the bottom, remove these, then you will pull up on the seat heat switch and you will be able to turn it enough to let it drop down below the top center console cover, then you will need to set the e-brake and put the gear selector in drive then you will need to open the double cup holder and then if you pull up and back on the rear near where the armrest closes at it then it will come out. Mine did not have any metal clips but had plastic notches that lightly holds it in place. Then you will have to pull out the metal clip that is in front underneath the shifter depress button. Then you will lift up slightly on the lower shifter boot plastic frame up just high enough to disconnect the gear selector light socket and the Perf. Shift button wire plugs, then being careful lift up on the shift knob and the and boot frame until the frame stops then underneath the boot frame there will be two white plastic catches the front one you will pull back and the rear one you will pull forward and then lift upward out the rest of the way. then down toward the back underneath the ashtray there will be two philips headed screws to remove.
Then down on the floor just behind the shifter assembly there will be two more 10mm bolts to remove and underneath to the back of the ashtray there will be two philips headed or a small torx screws to remove. Then unplug the lower accessory plug in and the there are two spring clips holding a small wiring harness to the left side of the center console to remove. Then flip back the passenger seat back all the way down then slide the center console back far enough to get out from under the dash then pull out over the passenger seat and out the door. I hope this helps.
