I'm stripping down a door to have it painted and I can't figure out how to remove these clips without destroying them.
It's like a rivet type clip that holds the metal lower door molding retaining strip.
I'd pop them from the back but I don't want to destroy the block of sound deading foam glued to the inside of the door.

    Any tricks?

Just paint over them. Like you said, they are riveted in place. I'd assume that would involve drilling those rivets out, which means you will need a rivet gun to put them back in place. It's all going to be covered by the molding anyway.

I had some scrap doors, I was trying to remove those and just broke them.

Thanks. I just left the piece on there.. No big deal if it gets painted over I guess.

My body and paint guy must be a miracle worker..
I dropped it off with the piece on there and he gave it back with the clips removed and undamaged.

New shiny white door is hung and loaded with parts.

Looks like you got a different door, or he took parts off and didn't put them on again.

I finally got all the old mounting tape off the original white trim pieces and got them mounted this weekend..

    It's all back together now.

The door was replaced.. I got a nice black one off a 97 GP at a local yard and had it painted white.
Cost was a little more than I planned for .. In the end I could have gone to Portland and picked up a white door for about the same cost and much less work (door+gas+food)

I re-used the OE white trim, door handle, mirror, plus a few other bits.

Hinges, brackets, latch, and regulator were from the 97 door.. The originals were all bent.
