    You mean like this?

I just masked it off good with paper and tape. Then I sprayed on a couple coats of regular white spray paint for a light colored base coat and let it dry completely. Then I shot it with a couple coats of my usual blue metal flake spray paint. Let it dry and reinstall. The light color base coat makes the final color pop a little more and makes it easier in the fact you don't have to apply a ton of coats to cover up the dark carpet or cloth.

Several coats with plenty of drying time in between would probably be the only advice I could give you for white. You might try a couple coats of KILZ paint first to block out the gray.
