But I believe most people just pull the fuse and manually turn lights on when wanted.

Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear.
Well, I'm a pretty stubborn guy, and besides that, I love a challenge! Pulling the DRL fuse or module wasn't an option for me. I refused to do away with my automatic headlights or my DRLs. I like my DRLs and I like to be seen. The brighter the better in the daytime. I've had one too many people pull out in front of me because they didn't see me for some reason. I guess white cars are harder to see sometimes? I also ride a motorcycle, so maybe it's just burned into my head to be seen. Anyway, here is what I did:

The whole project cost under $14 barring the HIDs themselves. I bought an $8 HID relay harness from Ebay. I used a 4700uf 35V capacitor to the coil of the relay and a 3A 400PIV diode on the positive lead of the wire leading to the relay coil preceding the cap. I'm pretty sure I could have used a 2200uf capacitor but the 4700uf wasn't that much more money. (Bigger is usually better anyway) It takes about a 1/2 second for the 4700uf to discharge to the point that the contacts drop out. So they stay on for a 1/2 second after power is disconnected from the coil (no more chattering from the pulsed HID voltage). I put the diode in line on the + side of the coil wire to prevent any backflow of current from the capacitor to my DRL module that might cause damage. It works just like it should. Now my HID's come on as my DRLs. They fire up every single time! If I'm not feeling too lazy, I might post pics or a video and a step by step if anyone is interested. The whole harness mod took less then 40 minutes and I was being meticulous with it. Now it fires up in DRL mode just like some of the high end auto manufacturers and my automatic headlights work too.

Total cost: < $14
Relay harness from Ebay = $8 with free shipping "Took 4 days to get from CA to Kansas City, MO"
Capacitor = $3.50 ($6 or more if you get it from Radio Shack)
Diode = $1.79 (2 pack) at Radio Shack
Solder and Iron = $0 (had it already)
Heat shrink = $0 (had it already)
Electrical tape = $0 (had it already)
Liquid electrical tape = $0 (had it already) - Optional, but I use it to make all connections completely water tight. You can't waterproof with regular electrical tape and there are some things that you just can't heat shrink.
