Hello everyone I am painting my Spoiler because of heavy oxidation and I want some basic, yet detailed instructions on how to do it to make sure 'im doing it right. Here's my materials:1 spray can of paint, 1 spray can of clear coat, and 1500 sand paper.

*I plan to (after thoroughly cleaning it with water, car wash soap, and some household 409 all purpose cleaner):
    1. Remove and sand the spoiler, making sure to get oxidized areas until its almost down to old base coat

2.apply 2-3 coats of clear coat, wait 15-25 min between coats to let dry

3.Apply Colored coat and let dry.

If anything looks wrong with these steps please help me out by giving me tips on what looks wrong because i'm not very experienced at painting cars.

    thanks so much!

P.S also my bumper is faded so i was planning on using some turtlewax brand rubbing compound and my orbital buffer to try and get it shiny again, will that work?

First thing that sticks out is that clear coat goes on top the base coat, to protect it.
Also you may want to work with a few more sandpapers. Rough it up a bit more and then finish sand it with 2000.

use a sanding block or you will leave finger groves in the old paint, and it will show through the new paint.

sand, paint color, then clear coat.

and if you are sanding it why bother with all the cleaners? just sand it prep with some prep pads to clean off any oils left by your hands. i cant think of what he cleaner is called right now off my head. look it up if someone don't chime in.

So you dont think I should wash it. I was told to wash it so the dirt and other stuff would show up in the paint?

i see no need if you are sanding it, sanding will remove a few layers of the paint, so what dirt would be left? like i said before there is a prep cleaner to remove dust and oils and contaminants, you use it after you sand the part.

search youtube for painting vids, they can be very helpful, seeing stuff is so much better than just trying it out.

Your best bet is to wash it with a decent household soap, and use a wax remover. Yes sanding will get rid of most diry, but you also dont want dirt/sand/bird **** scratching the surface you're trying to get totally smooth. Plus, all that stuff will chew up your sand paper/block.

When you think you're done sanding, sand again. 90% of painting is the prepwork. Do a few light coats of color, then do a light sand, followed by a few medium coats, with sanding in-between, then one 'wet' coat, with a final sanding.
Repeat that with the clear coat, and you'll have a damn fine looking spoiler.

So basically your saying: Clean, sand, 2-3 layers of base coat, sand again, then clear coat?

For paint prep I have always used Duplicolor Paint Prep and Wax Remover. And for removing the oxidation with just sanding won't work in my opinion but thats just me.

If you are going to paint the whole spoiler i would get some primer from walmart too.Just coat the spoiler with one even coat of primer before you paint. All it will do is "seal" the old paint you are painting over and keep any possible contaminants from showing up in the new paint (oils, solvents ect.)The cheapo walyworld sandable primer is fine. Just my 2cents...
