If I convert my stock lights to HID, all I need are ballasts and bulbs right? Or am I missing something?

Probably. When your ballasts start up they draw between 6 to10+ amps of current (per ballast) depending on the manufacturer's specs. Your stock halogens don't draw nearly that much (55 W / 12 V = 4.58 amps per bulb) which means your stock headlight harness can't handle that much current. Additionally, are your DRL's the headlights? If so that'll cause problems too.

Raptor Brand 35W HID Kit: DDM Tuning - HID Kits, HID Bulbs, DEPO Lighting, BMW and Porsche Performance Accessories
Just got a set of these for the fog lights in my GTI and they work great and are super cheap. They only draw 6 amps at startup and then 3 amps after that, so it won't fry your stock wiring. If I can run these and HIDs in my low beams at the same time on a car that is known for having crappy wiring, then you should be fine.

HID kits are all made by the same couple companies in China, the only difference is that other third parties will slap stickers on them, then sell them for crazy high prices. Not that I'm trying to impose on RedDawnGXP, but water is water, HID's are HID's. They all do the same thing and are all the same technology and made in the same factory. I didn't believe it at first, but after doing my research before buying my fog light HID's I found this to be true. So why pay hundreds for something that cost a couple bucks to make? You're just paying extra for a Name.

As a side note, if you have your DRL's running your headlights, you're going to want to change that becuase if not, your HID headlights might flicker and turn off.

    Hope this helps.

As another note, if you have the stock headlights, it's just going to throw light like crazy and be really annoying to other drivers and won't create a nice sharp cut off line. HID's are in their prime when put into projector housings. They make a world of difference.

well, i have a cloth over my diode for now which puts the headlights on all the time, but i disable them when i don't need them on...so you think i should go get a harness? does that just give a ground wire, and then a wire to the battery...

    A relay harness has:

    1. A fused 12V input to the HID's (connects to + terminal on battery or distribution post).

    2. A ground (to chassis or battery)

    3. A socket that plugs into you headlight socket.

    Very simple.
